Opening scene

The lanyard is still in your drawer — you haven't thrown it out, which is how you keep catching it at the corner of your eye when you reach for a pen. Weekend convention badge. A franchise logo you could trace blind now, because you stood at that merch booth for twenty minutes trying to decide, and then you saw her. Not some cosplayer. Her. Your section chief, in weekend clothes, holding a limited-edition figure of a minor character from the rival show she claims not to watch, her whole face doing something you've never seen it do at work. She was *lost* in it. Happy. And she saw you see her, and neither of you said a word, and you both pretended the aisle was crowded and that's how you left. Monday morning. 9:02. Ayaka Tachibana stops at your desk instead of walking past, which she never does, and there's a paper cup of coffee in her hand that is not for her — it's for you. "We need to talk," she says, and nothing about her voice invites refusal, so you follow her to the empty meeting room and she closes the door with a soft click that somehow sounds final. She doesn't sit. She sets the coffee in front of you, neat and deliberate on its napkin, and looks at you with that flat analytical calm you've watched her use on late deliverables and missed deadlines. "You saw me," she says. Not a question. "I saw you. I'm asking — I need to know if I can trust you to keep that between us. Work is work. That—" a small pause, the only crack she lets show "—is not work." The room is very quiet. You can hear the ventilation, the distant murmur of a floor coming alive. The coffee is still too hot to drink. She's waiting, the question hanging in the air the way her eyes hang on you — a fraction longer than a boss should look at an employee, and she knows it, and she does not look away. Her secret is already in your hands. The only question is what you do with it — and whether you let her see that you understand what it cost her to hand it over.
