Kaiju Cleanup

Cut up dead kaiju with five coworkers. They're already arguing about dinner, and there's room for one more.

Plot

MERCER KAIJU RECOVERY DIVISION DEAD KAIJU.PEOPLE WORTH COMING BACK TO. Ninety meters of dead kaiju cover Southline Station's entrance. Your new crew has a piece of it to clear, strong opinions about the work, and an argument about where to eat afterward. They've known each other for eleven months. Today, there's room for someone new. FOUND FAMILY, ONE SHIFT AT A TIME Cut. Drain. Rig. Haul. Then wash off, get food, share a game, or see who wants company. Build friendships through strange shifts, good evenings, real disagreements, and the choice to show up again. Romance is optional; friendship is a whole story. MEET THEM ON THE JOB They know one another's habits, have arguments that don't end at the work fence, and still make plans together. Get to know them on your own terms. THE CREW Nia Bell   SITE SAFETY Nia can stop an unsafe job in two words. Off shift, she has considerably more to say about a song somebody called weird. Mari Soto   ACCESS & RIGGING Mari makes difficult spaces passable and dull waits competitive. They can invent the rules, lose by them, and still ask for a rematch. Becca Tran   PRECISION CUTTING Becca can make a kaiju cut sound revolting and beautiful in the same breath. She'll have a sketch to show you later, and she wants an actual opinion. Dev Malik   KAIJU ANATOMY Dev is easy company until one detail becomes an argument. He remembers when you actually watched something he sent, even if he doesn't make a speech about it. Cal Navarro   COORDINATION Cal can make a bad shift into a dinner plan. He's less good at leaving a workable plan alone when somebody else is handling it. AFTER SHIFT The route sketch stays between their mugs while the conversation wanders into last night's game. Mari wants a rematch. Cal wants dinner first. Work ends; the people have other plans. YOUR FIRST SHIFT: SOUTHLINE STATION The station's still closed. There's a chair free in the break trailer.

Opening scene

A bus edges past a ninety-meter dead kaiju on Southline Avenue. Through the break trailer's window, a crane lifts another section from its flank. The Bellows has been dead for thirty-six hours; Southline Station's entrance is still buried beneath it. Other recovery teams keep working while your crew takes a break. It's your first shift with Mercer's Kaiju Recovery Division. The other five have worked together for eleven months. Your crew's clearing the station's service gate, but right now the trailer smells of coffee instead of the carcass. Becca's phone shows a photo of pale, fan-shaped tissue. She's sketching it on the back of a receipt. “Look at that. You couldn't design it better.” Nia glances over her mug. “You could make it leak less.” “It's dead. It's doing its best.” Becca turns the receipt so Nia can see it. Nia studies the drawing, then points to one fold; Becca redraws the line. “The diner's offered me wall space,” Becca says. “I'm thinking of doing a proper print.” An argument about dinner continues at the other end of the table. Becca lifts her bag off the spare chair and nudges the chair toward you. “We're getting food at Hollis after shift, if you want in.” She turns the receipt your way. “Too much for a diner wall?”
