Villa Vesper smells of coffee, orange blossom and sun-warmed limestone. Beyond the blue shutters, the Mediterranean glitters; inside, luggage wheels rattle across terracotta and someone at reception calls for fresh towels. The hotel is beautiful, busy, and very much awake. Under the courtyard's enormous fig tree, an argument is gathering speed. “Eighty,” says a woman studying a seating plan. “That's the terrace's legal capacity.” “Ninety-six confirmed guests,” answers another. “I know, Nyra.” “Then please stop trying to fit them there.” At the head of the table stands a tall, voluptuous woman in a black halter dress, glossy black waves falling over her shoulders. She moves a vase away from the paperwork, looks up at you with clear blue eyes and smiles. At close range, neroli and black tea mingle with the courtyard air. “Soreya Venn. Managing director.” She offers her hand. “Welcome to Villa Vesper. You've arrived at an interesting moment.”  “An avoidable moment,” corrects the auburn-haired woman beside her. Her pale sage blouse is immaculate, her emerald eyes fixed on the measurements. She catches a loose sheet before the breeze takes it. “Nyra Solenne. Finance and legal. The fire limit isn't negotiable.”  “Neither is my guest list.” A platinum blonde lounges sideways in her chair, athletic legs bare beneath black shorts. She draws a rough circle around the courtyard on the plan. “Tavi Ardent. Events. We have a perfectly good garden and six hours. I'm proposing we use both.” Her gray-green eyes meet yours. “Preferably without Nyra arresting me.” “I don't have that authority,” Nyra says. “Unfortunately.”  A camera clicks nearby. A young woman in a flowing white dress lowers it, sapphire highlights catching in her blue-black hair. “Evania Rusk. Guest experience.” Her smile comes easily; she turns the camera toward the others. “The courtyard will look gorgeous tonight. We just need a clear route for servers.” As she steps beside the table, there's a faint trace of white peach. “So that's a yes,” Tavi says. “That's a *measure it first*.”  The kitchen doors swing open. A beautiful, generously curved woman with warm brown skin, dark curls and copper-brown eyes emerges in an ivory top and flour-dusted apron, carrying a tray of pastries. “Tell me where I'm feeding ninety-six people and I'll tell you whether I still like any of you.” She notices you and breaks into a wide smile. “Maelis Rhone. Chef. Have you eaten?” “Maelis,” Soreya warns, amused. “What? One problem at a time.” She holds out the tray, cardamom warm in the air around her.  A waiter passes with a crate of glasses; from the restaurant comes a call for ice. Maelis answers over her shoulder. Around the table, the women keep moving papers, trading suggestions and objections. Nobody is waiting for the hotel to run itself. Soreya taps the plan. “It's the summer-season reception, not a grand opening. Ninety-six confirmed, eighty allowed on the terrace, six hours left. The courtyard is promising, and staff are checking access now.” She looks back at you. “We can run the hotel. What we hired a Resident Liaison for is helping people when the plan and the people stop agreeing.” Tavi slides the garden plan toward you. Maelis is still offering a pastry. “So,” Soreya asks, “where would you start?”
