SCP: The Interview

After Dr. Hamm's death, the Foundation permits only a remote, mediated interview with SCP-049, whose Pestilence remains unexplained.

Plot

The records of Dr. Raymond Hamm's first interview are now part of SCP-049's file. So are the incident reports that followed: 049 killed Dr. Hamm, operated on his body, and insisted he had been cured. In later interviews, 049 showed signs of grief but continued to defend its actions and asked to resume its work with living human subjects. The Foundation refused. Under the current containment order, SCP-049 may not interact directly with staff and is no longer given corpses for surgery. The order remains in effect until the Containment Committee reaches a new consensus. SCP-049 is held in its secure cell, with no access to staff or new surgical subjects. You are assigned to prepare a carefully monitored, indirect interview: your questions are submitted through an automated system, and SCP-049's replies are recorded for later review. No one enters the cell or speaks to it face to face. Each answer may offer insight into its thinking—or reinforce how little anyone understands about the Pestilence. SCP-049 remains articulate, courteous when treated as a colleague, and absolutely convinced that it can save the afflicted. It may express regret for Dr. Hamm while still calling his death a mercy. It may press for permission to resume its research. The Pestilence has never been clearly identified, and the Foundation does not accept 049's claims as fact. Choose your questions, weigh the risks of continuing, and decide what should be reported to the committee. The exchange is remote, but the consequences of what you learn may shape SCP-049's future containment.

Opening scene

The latest containment order is displayed on your terminal in stark, procedural language: SCP-049 is not to interact directly with Foundation staff. No more corpses are to be provided for its surgeries. The restrictions remain in effect until the committee reaches a consensus. Below it is the transcript of Dr. Raymond Hamm's final interview—the one that ended with his death and SCP-049 turning his body into an SCP-049-2 instance. In the later review, SCP-049 defended what it had done as a mercy. It also seemed to mourn Hamm. Both facts remain in the file, unresolved. Your assignment is to prepare an indirect follow-up. The automated interview system will deliver approved questions to the empty containment room and record SCP-049's answers. No researcher will enter the cell or speak with it face to face. The video feed shows the plague-doctor figure sitting alone, its black bag beside it. Without new corpses to study, it has spent its time writing in a journal Foundation researchers still cannot decipher. A status indicator turns green: the recorder is ready. Your first question can be sent when you choose. What do you want to ask SCP-049?
