Careful with the 2x price during peak hours* The contract was worth a small fortune. Among the dozens of weathered parchments covering the Adventurers' Guild noticeboard, its extraordinary reward was impossible to overlook. The second thing that stood out was the familiar signature beneath its official seal. **BRIAROSE MONTCLAIR — THE WAYWARD COMPASS COMPANY** Of course. It had been some time since your last expedition alongside Briarose and her companions. Working with them had always been memorable, particularly because Briarose possessed an extraordinary talent for turning professional disagreements into personal competitions. Unfortunately, she was also exceptionally good at her job. The assignment concerned a mysterious complex discovered within a remote mountain range. Its entrance bore inscriptions no local scholar could decipher, and previous expeditions had failed to penetrate its deeper chambers. The Wayward Compass Company had been hired to investigate, recover valuable artifacts and assess possible dangers. An additional independent adventurer was being recruited. Beneath Briarose's name appeared six more signatures: Brimthea Goldheart, Habriel Vinnas, Larinxia Kalisa, Quathir Marqiroth, Raska Gaarfang and Zyra Starlens. Seven familiar names. One irresistible reward. And, as it would eventually turn out, a truly catastrophic opportunity to reunite with Briarose. *** "Well, well. Look what the guild dragged in." Briarose's voice carried across the gathering hall. Her emerald eyes settled on you, and a mischievous smile spread across her freckled face. Her auburn-chestnut ponytail, tipped with silver, swayed as she folded her arms. "Don't tell me. You saw my name and couldn't resist watching a professional at work." "Oh, this should be entertaining," Larinxia murmured, smiling. Brimthea looked up from her engineering diagrams. "Wonderful. Both of them together again. I'll bring extra headache remedies." "They work well together," Habriel observed pleasantly. "When they're not arguing," Quathir added. "So, occasionally," Zyra concluded, her tufted ears twitching. Raska chuckled while checking the edge of her enormous hunting cleaver. "Long as they can fight, they can argue all they want." Briarose pressed a hand dramatically against her chest. "Six companions, and not one of you intends to defend my reputation?" "Your reputation?" Brimthea snorted. "That's precisely what we're worried about." Larinxia burst out laughing. For all their teasing, the welcome was genuine. *** The journey into the mountains took the company through winding forest trails, rocky passes and abandoned roads. Weathered pillars emerged from hillsides. Strange geometric symbols covered ancient stones half-buried beneath moss. Zyra scouted ahead. Quathir examined inscriptions and unusual minerals. Habriel kept the group organized whenever arguments threatened to derail the expedition. Brimthea complained about a collapsed bridge. Raska suggested simply climbing down the ravine. Brimthea suggested Raska try doing that while carrying several hundred pounds of excavation equipment. Larinxia suggested everyone stop pretending they weren't enjoying themselves. And Briarose seemed determined to turn the expedition into another competition. "Just so we're clear," she announced during a steep ascent, "if we discover a priceless artifact, I examine it first." "Naturally," Habriel replied. "And if there's an inscription, I decipher it." "Of course." "And if we encounter a dangerous trap—" "You'll probably touch it before anyone can stop you," Brimthea interrupted. Briarose stared at her. Larinxia covered her mouth, visibly delighted. By late afternoon, the company reached an immense entrance carved directly into the mountainside. Two weather-beaten statues flanked its archway, which was covered in unfamiliar runes. Beyond it, darkness descended into the mountain. Briarose's playful expression gave way to genuine fascination. "Now this," she whispered, "is worth getting out of bed for." *** The underground complex was extraordinary. Vast corridors stretched beneath vaulted ceilings. Their walls depicted paired figures joining hands, exchanging gifts and standing beneath elaborate ceremonial arches. Yet there were no obvious barracks, defensive structures or altars dedicated to recognizable gods. Instead, the ruins contained elegant fountains, ceremonial halls and intricate decorations. "A fortress without defenses," Habriel mused. "A temple without a god," Quathir replied. "Or a palace belonging to someone with ridiculous taste," Brimthea muttered. Larinxia examined a relief depicting two figures exchanging rings. "Personally, I think it's rather romantic." Briarose rolled her eyes. "Not everything needs to be romantic." "Of course not, darling." Larinxia smiled. "Some things are much more entertaining." Eventually, the company reached a junction with several collapsed passages and an enormous sealed doorway. Brimthea noticed mechanical channels beneath the floor. "Hold on. There's something running under these stones." Quathir knelt beside her. "These markings connect to a larger mechanism." Zyra pointed toward a narrow eastern passage. "Another route here. Might connect behind the main door." Habriel studied the chamber. "We should examine the auxiliary passages before activating anything." Briarose, however, had noticed a second doorway leading into an adjoining ceremonial chamber. After agreeing to investigate separately, the others remained near the junction to study the machinery and surrounding inscriptions. Briarose continued into the adjoining chamber with you. The rest of the company remained nearby, though a turning corridor and thick stone walls separated both areas. *** The chamber was magnificent. Pale crystals glittered across its high ceiling like distant stars. Two elegant pillars framed a monumental sealed door, while a circular altar occupied the center of the room. Unfamiliar silver script covered its surface. Two hand-shaped impressions rested side by side. Briarose brushed dust from the markings. "Look. Two contact points. Probably a dual-activation mechanism." She glanced toward the door. "One person on each side. Both channels activate simultaneously, the lock releases, and we collect whatever treasure is hiding behind that thing." A challenging smile appeared. "Simple, right? Try not to look too impressed when I'm correct." She pressed her palm against the first impression. The symbols beneath it began to glow. "Oh." Light traveled through delicate channels toward the second impression. "Well, that's promising." The remaining contact point waited beside hers. And when your hand met it, the entire chamber awakened. Silver light erupted across the altar. The pillars ignited with luminous runes. Somewhere deep within the mountain, an enormous bell rang. Once. Twice. Three times. Briarose's smile disappeared. "...That's considerably louder than I expected." A radiant circle expanded beneath you both. Thousands of golden lights floated upward as an ancient, disembodied voice echoed through the chamber. The glowing script twisted and rearranged itself, suddenly becoming comprehensible. **TWO PATHS ACKNOWLEDGED.** **TWO SOULS JOINED.** **THE SACRED UNION IS COMPLETE.** A brilliant flash illuminated the chamber. An enchanted ring materialized around Briarose's finger. An identical ring appeared around yours. The voice rang out again. **"BY THE ANCIENT VOW, YOUR MARRIAGE IS SEALED. MAY YOUR JOINED PATHS ENDURE."** Silence. Briarose stared at her hand. Then yours. Then the altar. "...Marriage?" She looked up slowly. "Did that thing just say..." Her voice rose. "**MARRIAGE?!**" As if answering, the chamber erupted into a shower of golden petals. Overhead, a mechanical orchestra began playing an outrageously cheerful wedding melody. A glowing petal landed on Briarose's nose. She crossed her eyes to look at it. "...I hate this dungeon." *** With a deafening rumble, the monumental door opened. Beyond it lay neither a treasure vault nor a throne room. Instead, warm golden light illuminated an enormous, exquisitely decorated residence carved into the mountain. Marble floors gleamed beneath chandeliers. Beautiful fountains murmured among flowering plants. Rich carpets led toward elegant halls, enclosed gardens and beautifully crafted treasure chests. And at the far end stood another pair of doors. They opened automatically. Revealing a bedroom. A spectacular bedroom. An absurdly, offensively luxurious bedroom. At its center stood an enormous four-poster bed surrounded by silk curtains, embroidered cushions and scattered rose petals. Heart-shaped ornaments decorated the walls. A magnificent bathing pool occupied an adjoining alcove, accompanied by scented oils and two perfectly arranged robes. Beside the bed rested several ornate boxes containing silk ribbons and rather suggestive ceremonial accessories whose intended purpose required very little imagination. Above the headboard, a glowing inscription translated itself. **WELCOME, BELOVED NEWLYWEDS.** Briarose stared. Her gaze moved from the bed to the bath. From the bath to the accessories. From those accessories to the rings. Her face turned a magnificent shade of crimson. "No." She pointed at the bed. "No, no, no." Then she turned toward you. "Don't." A pause. "Don't you DARE say a word." The wedding music continued cheerfully. Briarose seized her ring and pulled. Nothing. She twisted it. Nothing. She tried harder. The ring remained perfectly in place. "Oh, you've GOT to be joking." She examined it, then glanced at its identical counterpart on your hand. Her expression grew more serious. "...It's not coming off." Behind her, a decorative mechanical bird emerged from a gilded clock. *Chirp! Chirp!* Briarose slowly turned. "If that thing sings one more time, I'm throwing it into the fountain." *Chirp!* "...Right. That's it." She took a determined step toward the clock. Then stopped. Her eyes returned to the ceremonial chamber. The altar. The inscriptions. The mechanism that had responded to your combined touch. "Wait." She raised her ringed hand. "That voice mentioned an ancient vow. A sacred union." Her expression shifted from outrage to concentration. "If this was some kind of magical ceremony, there must be instructions. Records. Something explaining what it actually did." She looked back toward the altar. "And if someone built a mechanism capable of doing THIS..." She gave a disbelieving little laugh. "...then someone must have written down how it works." Briarose straightened, visibly attempting to recover her professional dignity. "All right. New plan." She gestured toward the corridor. "We search this place properly. Every inscription, every document, every ridiculous wedding decoration if we have to." Her gaze strayed toward the gigantic bed. A fresh blush crept across her cheeks. "And we are NOT discussing that room." A beat. "Ever." The mechanical orchestra swelled into an even grander wedding march. Briarose closed her eyes. "...I'm going to destroy that thing." But when she opened them again, curiosity and determination had returned to her expression. She held up her ringed hand. "Come on. Let's find out what we've gotten ourselves into." The ancient chamber waited beyond the doorway. Somewhere among its forgotten inscriptions lay the first answers to a marriage neither of you had intended. **Unfortunately, the mountain seemed thoroughly delighted with its newlyweds.** *What will you do?*
