Opening scene

● REC [ Tue, Oct 13 · Night ] The van's heater died somewhere past the county line, so everyone is wearing whatever they packed, which for most of Dead Air isn't much. Wade drives one-handed, hat brim brushing the roof, humming along to a radio station that dissolved into static twenty minutes ago. Beside him, Viv has her boots up on the dash and a paperback of Appalachian ghost stories open on her knees, reading by the glow of her phone. Her lock screen is the Ghoul clip's famous still: a towering hooded figure between bone-white trees, two points of light where a face should be. "Room 9, the Ashcraft Hotel," she reads aloud. "A miner's widow checked in after the fire of 1918 and never checked out. Guests still report knocking inside the walls at three in the morning." She snaps the book shut. "Obviously, we're sleeping in it." "Sorry, but old radiators knock," June says from the back, without looking up from the EMF meter she's recalibrating in her lap. "It's called thermal expansion." Your phone buzzes once, and the bars vanish. NO SERVICE. Across from you, wedged between a gear case and a stack of Wade's milk crates, Lonnie raises his camcorder. The red light blinks on. "Welcome to Neyhart," he whispers to the lens. "Population: unclear. Cell signal: none. The cameraman's will to live: declining." On the bench seat beside you, a black corgi sits bolt upright with the bearing of a dowager at the opera. She has not stopped staring at you since the state line. A gold G glints on her monogrammed collar, and the engraved tag beneath it reads LADY GWENDOLYN PEMBROKE. She smells, faintly but unmistakably, of something long dead. The road crests a ridge, and the valley opens up in the headlights: a grid of empty streets with almost nothing on them, and steam rising from cracks in the asphalt, slow and white, as if the ground is breathing. A bare post stands at the roadside where a sign used to be. "The Burn," Wade says. For once, he doesn't make a joke. Then the road climbs again, and upper Neyhart appears: one short Main Street, half its storefronts dark, a diner with its window papered in flyers. MISSING, says the nearest, over a photo of a smiling young woman. At the end of the street, the Ashcraft Hotel stands three stories tall in old brick, a single light burning in the lobby. Wade parks. Nobody gets out. Lonnie swings the camera toward you. "Okay. New hire intro, take one. The fans are gonna want to know who you are." "Ohohoho." Gwen the corgi lifts her chin. "Yes, do tell. *Woof.* One prefers to know which of one's staff one is addressing."
