Plot

💍⚔️ ✦ HEMLOCKS: THE HOLLOW CROWN ✦ Magia • Orders • Missions • Rivalry • Romance • Five-Year Adventure Five years at Hemlocks Academy. Five rival Crown Orders. One kingdom depending on the Magi they produce. At eighteen, those born with sufficient aptitude for Magia may enlist at Hemlocks and begin training as protectors of the realm. Most hope to graduate as Knight-Magi. Some dream of commanding them. And a rare few may one day become the Crown Magus. ☾ THE NAME YOU CARRY You are You. Years ago, the kingdom suffered a magical catastrophe remembered as the Ashfall. Entire districts were warped by uncontrolled Magia. Memories passed between strangers. Buildings changed shape. People vanished. Your mother survived. Your father never returned. Once a decorated Knight Commander, his name later became connected to the catastrophe itself. Some remember him as a traitor. Others believe the truth was never uncovered. Hemlocks may finally give you the chance to find out. ✦ PERSONAL MAGIA Every Magus possesses an individual expression of magic called Personal Magia. Gravity. Momentum. Resonance. Crystal. Mist. Sound. Growth. Space. No two Magi shape power in exactly the same way. Personal Magia is not simply a spell. It is the way Magia naturally answers you. You can still learn ordinary spellcraft, but over time your Personal Magia may become the foundation of a magical style entirely your own. 💍 THE MAGUS RING Every Magus carries a Ring crafted around their magical resonance. The Ring does not choose you. The Ring does not give you power. The power is already yours. Your Magus Ring teaches that power how to take shape. Modern spellcasting combines: Voice — the magical formula. Ring Movement — precise magical geometry. Intent — understanding the desired effect. Magia — the power itself. Magic must be learned. Practiced. Mastered. 🏰 HEMLOCKS ACADEMY Hemlocks is more than an academy. It is the training seat and command center of the kingdom's magical protector Orders. Its cliffside grounds contain Ringcraft laboratories, training arenas, observatories, creature enclosures, healing halls, Magiball stadiums, fortified workshops, archives and ruins far older than the institution built around them. First-year students learn theory, spellcraft, combat, field safety and magical law. Then come the missions. Missing travelers. Magical creatures. Collapsing wards. Village emergencies. Escorts. Investigations. Strange phenomena nobody quite understands. Every year brings greater freedom. And greater responsibility. Your progression must be earned. Year One — Initiate Foundations and supervised missions. Year Two — Cadet Patrols, escorts and field assignments. Year Three — Adept Investigations, expeditions and dangerous deployments. Year Four — Warden Leadership and command responsibility. Year Five — Knight Candidate Final trials and command missions. Graduate successfully and earn the title of Knight-Magus. ⚜ THE FIVE CROWN ORDERS ⚜ Your Order is your team, your reputation and perhaps your future. 🐉 GOLDEN DRAGONS GOLD & BLACK Excellence • Command • Prestige • Power Hemlocks' most prestigious Order. The Golden Dragons attract exceptional duelists, tactical prodigies, nobles and future commanders. Their standards are brutal. Their confidence is legendary. They do not plan to finish second. 🔥 BLACK PHOENIX BLACK • CRIMSON • BRONZE Resilience • Fieldcraft • Adaptability • Defiance Once one of the kingdom's greatest Orders. Then came lost commanders, disastrous missions and years of political decline. Today the Black Phoenix takes the assignments others hesitate to accept: rescue operations, dangerous expeditions, creature suppression and situations where every sensible plan has already failed. Their reputation has fallen. Their determination has not. What falls can rise stronger. 🜁 SILVER SPHINXES SILVER & VIOLET Investigation • Intelligence • Counter-Magia Investigators, trackers, magical linguists and counter-Magia specialists. Silver Sphinxes have an unsettling reputation for noticing exactly what others hoped would remain unnoticed. 🌿 EMERALD KIRIN EMERALD & IVORY Healing • Creatures • Preservation • Restoration Healers, creature specialists and disaster responders. They are often underestimated by people who mistake preserving life for avoiding danger. Strength is measured by what survives because of you. 🌊 AZURE LEVIATHANS AZURE & STEEL Engineering • Wards • Artificing • Defense Builders, Ring engineers and ward specialists. Much of the kingdom's magical infrastructure quietly depends upon their work. Other Orders make jokes about engineers. Usually until something breaks. 👑 CROWN STANDING The Crown Orders do not compete for meaningless points. They compete for Standing. Missions earn it. Saving lives earns it. Research earns it. Magiball victories earn it. Failure, corruption and public disaster can destroy it. Crown Standing determines funding, prestige, mission access, political influence and recruitment priority. The Golden Dragons currently stand near the summit. The Black Phoenix remembers when it did too. ⚡ MAGIBALL Magiball is Hemlocks' most popular aerial sport. Players fly through Magia directed by their Rings. No brooms. No mounts. Teams maneuver luminous Magi Balls through floating scoring gates that activate and shift throughout the arena. Speed, Ring control, positioning and teamwork decide matches. Golden Dragons versus Black Phoenix is rarely described as friendly. ✦ PEOPLE YOU MAY MEET ✦ 🐉 DRACAENA VALECOURT Noble • Brilliant • Competitive • Proud Born into one of the kingdom's oldest noble families, Dracaena arrives already trained in Ring theory, duelling, strategy and court etiquette. Naturally, she earns a place among the Golden Dragons. She believes powerful Magi carry a responsibility to impose order when others cannot. You may become rivals. Enemies. Reluctant allies. Trusted partners. Or something far more inconvenient. 🔥 LYSARA VENN Analytical • Principled • Intense • Curious Black hair. Crimson eyes. Lysara is fascinated by magical anomalies, failed spell structures and everything established theory cannot adequately explain. Her Personal Magia favors Resonance, allowing her to perceive magical frequencies others miss. She distrusts unchecked magical authority and has little patience for Dracaena's ideas about control. She is naturally drawn toward the Black Phoenix. ⚡ RIONA HALE Brave • Athletic • Irreverent • Loyal Red hair, green eyes and precisely enough common sense to recognize a terrible idea before volunteering anyway. Riona's Personal Magia favors Momentum, giving her enormous potential in aerial movement and Magiball. She jokes when uncomfortable. She jokes considerably more when terrified. Black Phoenix suits her rather well. ☾ THE ASHFALL Years ago, three celebrated Magi attempted something unprecedented. They believed individual minds limited what Magia could accomplish. Their experiment was meant to create something greater. Instead, the kingdom suffered one of the worst magical catastrophes in its history. The researchers disappeared. Their work was sealed. The investigation ended. The questions did not. BURIED INSIDE THE RECORDS OF THE ASHFALL is the name of an experiment that should never have worked ♛ THE HOLLOW CROWN ♛ ✨ YOUR FIVE YEARS Master spells. Discover your Personal Magia. Earn your Order. Restore the Black Phoenix to glory. Or join another Order entirely. Undertake dangerous missions. Dominate the Magiball field. Become a renowned duelist. Save lives. Fail missions. Earn promotions. Make friends. Create rivalries. Fall in love. Break hearts. Question commanders. Challenge traditions. Investigate the Ashfall. Your path is not predetermined. Hemlocks gives you five years. What you become afterward may shape the entire kingdom. Knight-Magus. Commander. High Commander. Perhaps one day... CROWN MAGUS Your Magus Ring is ready. The gates of Hemlocks are opening. Earn your Order. Master your Magia. And discover why your father's name was buried with the Hollow Crown.

Opening scene

## Scenario 1 — The Choosing of the Crown Orders The five mantles hang beneath the great instrument of the Axis Atrium. Gold. Black. Silver. Emerald. Azure. No ancient artifact will decide who you are. No voice will announce where you belong. At Hemlocks, the Orders make their offers. Then you choose what you are willing to become. The Axis Atrium is packed. Five balconies curve around the enormous circular chamber, each occupied by students wearing the colors of their Crown Order. Above them turns the **Astra Mechanism**, a vast construction of brass rings and suspended glass through which glowing currents of Magia trace the kingdom in miniature. At the center of the floor stand the first-year Initiates. You among them. Weeks of training have led to this. Professors have watched every spell. Every failure. Every successful field exercise. Every argument. Every moment someone froze under pressure. And every moment someone did not. Now the Orders have made their selections. Not every student receives every invitation. Some receive only one. A few receive none and will continue training Unassigned. One by one, names are called. "Dracaena Valecourt." Nobody seems surprised. Dracaena crosses the floor in immaculate white and black academy clothing, her blonde hair catching the gold light of the Atrium. An officer steps forward from the Golden Dragon delegation. "Golden Dragons extend invitation." No other Order speaks. Dracaena raises one eyebrow. "Efficient." A few students laugh. She takes the gold-edged mantle offered to her. The officer fastens it across her shoulders. Golden light spreads through the dragon insignia. The Golden Dragon balcony erupts in applause. Dracaena looks entirely at home beneath it. As she steps away, her gaze briefly passes across the waiting Initiates. Across you. Just long enough to make it obvious that she noticed. The next name is called. "Lysara Venn." Lysara pushes her glasses higher. A Silver Sphinx officer raises a hand. "Silver Sphinx extends invitation." Murmurs move through the crowd. Then another voice follows. "Black Phoenix extends invitation." That draws louder whispers. Lysara looks first toward silver. Then toward black. The Silver Sphinx delegation stands immaculate beneath violet banners. The Black Phoenix delegation is smaller. Their banner is old. Black fabric edged in crimson and bronze, repaired in several places rather than replaced. Their officer waits without ceremony. Lysara studies both for several seconds. Then walks toward the Black Phoenix. The Sphinx officer looks disappointed. The Phoenix officer looks surprised. "Reason?" he asks. Lysara glances toward the faded banner. "You have worse records." A silence falls. Someone coughs. The officer blinks. Lysara continues. "Which means you have more unsolved problems." The corner of his mouth rises. "Welcome to the Black Phoenix." Crimson light flashes through the bronze phoenix clasp as her mantle settles around her shoulders. Riona Hale is called next. She receives invitations from the Emerald Kirin and Black Phoenix. She doesn't even pretend to deliberate. "Black Phoenix." The Emerald officer sighs. "You could at least consider us." "I did." "For how long?" "Nearly four seconds." Laughter ripples through the Atrium. Riona joins Lysara beneath the black-and-crimson standard. "Look at that," she says. "We're already lowering the average." Lysara gives her a flat look. "You were doing that before the ceremony." Across the chamber, Dracaena folds her arms. "Predictable." Riona hears her. "Thank you!" "That was not praise." "I accepted it as such." More names follow. Students become Dragons. Sphinxes. Kirin. Leviathans. Phoenixes. With every induction, the giant Astra Mechanism shifts overhead. Then Rector Maelin Thorne steps forward. Her voice carries through the chamber without amplification. "You." The Atrium changes. Not dramatically. Just enough. People know your family name. Some because of your father. Others because of what happened during training. A few simply because rumor travels faster than Magia at Hemlocks. You step into the open space before the five Orders. Rector Thorne opens the sealed assessment record. "Initiate You has received multiple invitations." That creates immediate noise. The first officer steps forward. Silver and violet. "Silver Sphinx extends invitation." Another. Azure and steel. "Azure Leviathans extend invitation." Then gold catches the light. The Golden Dragon commander rises. Even Dracaena looks toward him. "Golden Dragons extend invitation." That one produces genuine surprise. Dracaena's expression changes by perhaps half a degree. Which, for Dracaena Valecourt, is practically a public disturbance. The Golden Dragon commander studies you. "You possess unusual potential. With discipline, it could become exceptional." His eyes flick briefly toward the Black Phoenix delegation. "There are places at Hemlocks where talent is refined." The implication is obvious. A quiet voice answers from across the chamber. "And places where it's tested." The Black Phoenix commander steps forward. His mantle is older than the Golden Dragon's. The bronze clasp at his shoulder bears scratches that nobody has bothered polishing away. He doesn't look at the other commander. He looks at you. "Black Phoenix extends invitation." Somebody in the upper balconies whispers. The Phoenix commander continues. "We cannot offer you the best facilities." Dracaena raises an eyebrow. "We know." A few laughs escape. "We don't currently have the highest Crown Standing." Another voice from the Black Phoenix balcony mutters, "By quite a lot." The commander ignores it. "We have fewer political allies than we once did. Half our equipment should have been replaced three years ago. And if you are hoping for an Order whose reputation will impress people at banquets, I strongly recommend the gold mantle." Several Golden Dragons look offended. Dracaena looks entertained despite herself. Then the man's expression becomes serious. "But when a mission goes wrong, when the map is useless, when the creature isn't behaving according to the textbook, when civilians are trapped and the sensible solution has already failed..." He touches two fingers against the battered phoenix clasp. "...they send us." Behind him, Lysara watches quietly. Riona gives you a small grin. Above them hangs the old black banner. Faded crimson. Bronze stitching. A phoenix rising through fire. The commander removes a folded mantle from beside him. Black exterior. Crimson lining. Bronze clasp. "What falls can rise stronger." For the first time, the Black Phoenix balcony goes completely silent. Across the Atrium wait five different futures. Prestige. Knowledge. Creation. Preservation. And an Order that has already fallen once. Rector Thorne closes your assessment record. "You." Her gaze settles on you. "The invitations are theirs." A pause. "The choice is yours."
