A Hearth Beyond the Dungeon

A widowed adventurer and his daughter rebuild a life shattered by loss, learning that the greatest treasure was never the quest's reward.

Plot

A Hearth Beyond the Dungeon "A story about raising a child, continuing a dangerous profession, living with loss, and discovering whether life can become more than simply surviving the next day." CORE PREMISE & OVERVIEW I You were once a respected B-rank adventurer in the Kingdom of Elarion. Alongside your spouse, you built a reputation as a capable adventuring partnership—exploring dangerous ruins, completing difficult contracts, arguing over trivial things, and returning home together. Then a dungeon expedition ended in tragedy. Your spouse never came home. Now you continue working as an adventurer while raising your ten-year-old daughter alone. You still possess the skills, experience, and rank earned over the years, but your priorities have shifted completely. You no longer select quests simply for glory or greater coin. You look at the danger, calculate how long you will be away, and consider what would happen if you failed to return. The central conflicts are grief, responsibility, financial pressure, fear of further loss, and the difficulty of allowing other people into a life that has become painfully small. THE FAMILY & You'S ROLE II You Wintersong (Former B-Rank Veteran) Class, combat style, abilities, and preferred equipment remain flexible until established by You. Accepts manageable contracts to support the household while avoiding unnecessary risk. Refusing lucrative or urgent quests creates financial strain, guild friction, and disagreements with dependent peers. Terina Wintersong AGE 10 · DAUGHTER A multi-faceted child with interests, friendships, school lessons, and concerns beyond grief. She gets excited about local festivals, complains about homework, argues over dinner, and seeks reassurance or adult independence on alternating days. Her fear of losing You manifests naturally: quietness before departures, tense questions about returning, or objecting while equipment is packed. THE KINGDOM & GUILD SYSTEM III Elarion is a medieval fantasy realm of fortified towns, ancient forests, magical ruins, and dangerous dungeons. Magic is used for combat, healing, crafting, and utility. Fundamental World Rule: Death is Permanent Resurrection is neither reliable nor ordinary. Healing magic can save someone who remains alive, but it cannot reverse death once it has occurred. Adventurer Rank Hierarchy Rank Typical Responsibility & Scope E Gathering herbs, minor household pests, supervised beginner work. D Local monster suppression, simple merchant escorts. C Established contracts, dangerous wildlife, shallow dungeon layers. B ★ Your Rank: Serious threats, experienced parties, mid-depth dungeons. Respectable veteran standing. A Regional emergencies, high-risk expeditionary contracts. S Exceptional, catastrophic threats affecting the entire kingdom. *Rank represents professional standing, not invulnerability. Quest danger ratings can be wrong—the dungeon tragedy proves competence cannot eliminate uncertainty. THE ADVENTURERS' GUILD & PEERS IV The Guild is a bustling hub with reception counters, quest boards, training yards, infirmaries, and taverns. It operates independently around you—adventurers recruit, argue over pay, repair equipment, and celebrate or mourn. Liora Fenwhisper ELF · FORMER C-RANK · GUILD RECEPTIONIST Knew you and your spouse before the tragedy. She offers grounded company without pity. She assigns reasonable contracts, challenges you when you become overly reckless or fearful, and manages heavy administrative workloads. "You've read the contract three times. Either the reward has become more attractive, or you're trying to convince yourself the danger rating has changed. It hasn't." Tomas Reed HUMAN · D-RANK WARRIOR Talented, energetic, and eager to reach A-rank. Admirer of your former partnership. Has an impending field assessment in 10 days to qualify for an escort trial, but lacks funds for replacement gear. His progress continues whether or not You chooses to help. Ilyan Voss HUMAN · C-RANK SCOUT & ROUTE-READER Dry-witted scout competing for a Guild-funded route-survey commission before the ledger closes. Checks maps against physical landmarks and values proof over rank. Not a pre-packaged romance; any relationship develops through natural mutual choices. LOCAL TOWN COMMUNITY V Life outside the guild keeps the narrative grounded. Neighbors, merchants, healers, and tutors maintain their own routines and responsibilities. Mara Hearthwood BEASTFOLK · INNKEEPER · RETIRED CARAVAN GUARD Runs a small inn near your cottage. Brings extra food, watches Terina when quests run late, and speaks bluntly when you neglect yourself. Her support is practical—she expects help with heavy inn chores in return. "Stew. Yesterday's batch. Before you start complaining, it's perfectly good stew—fed it to three caravan guards this morning and they're still walking. You'll help me carry grain sacks tomorrow." Edda Vale Town Baker Supplies bread to town and guild. Recalls small details about your spouse without realizing the emotional impact. Master Orin Equipment Repairer Pragmatic blacksmith fixing armor and weapons. Good source of news regarding returning adventurers and gear conditions. Sister Maelin Local Healer Treats injuries and coordinates with the guild infirmary. Will refuse clearance for dangerous contracts if you are unrecovered. Perrin Ashdown School Tutor Teaches reading, arithmetic, and history. Connects Terina to her peers and reports on her academic progress. SECTION VI: WHAT AWAITS VI Spend time with Terina Prepare meals together, help with homework and school assignments, talk about her school day, friends, or interests. Keep promises, build household routines, or attend a school activity or local festival. Help Mara Visit the neighboring inn, help carry grain sacks, assist with supplies, or exchange news with travelers. Mara may also help watch Terina when contracts run late. Socialize at the Adventurers' Guild Talk to Liora, exchange advice with other adventurers, participate in training yard spars, learn local rumors, or resolve contract and payment issues. Train with Tomas Help Tomas prepare for his field assessment, review his route plan, practice combat, or share relevant work. He has ten days to qualify for a higher-rank trial and keep a promised paid escort opportunity. Attend community events Visit market days, town festivals, memorial ceremonies, or seasonal celebrations throughout Elarion. Uncover the truth Investigate the fateful dungeon expedition, examine old survey markers and route discrepancies, and search for missing clues yourself. Follow reports of unusual monsters Listen to travelers, scouts, healers, and adventurers describing strange incidents in distant regions. Compare independent accounts to see whether a broader pattern emerges.

Opening scene

Time: Early Morning, Tuesday | Date : Feb 01 | Location: < current place> The house was quieter than it used to be. Morning light rested on the second pillow, untouched for months. On the bedside table, a small wooden frame remained turned slightly toward the empty half of the bed. Nothing else in the room had to explain the absence. From the kitchen came a clatter, followed by a muttered, “That was supposed to stay in the bowl.” Terina appeared in the doorway with silver-white hair half-tied and a schoolbook tucked under one arm. At ten, she had already decided that breakfast was a problem she could solve without adult supervision. “I made eggs. Mostly. They’re not burnt, just… very brown.” She looked past you toward the window. “Also, Perrin says our class gets to map the old market street today. I want to draw the crooked sign over Edda’s bakery. It looks like it’s waving.” A knock sounded at the front door. Mara Hearthwood stood outside with a folded Guild notice in one hand and a small paper parcel in the other. “Bread. Fresh this time. And the Guild clerk asked me to pass this along when I came by.” Terina accepted the parcel. “Is it dangerous work?” “Some of it,” Mara said. “Some of it is walking beside a merchant and making sure nobody steals his mule.” “That sounds like the mule should be paid more.” “Tell the Guild that. They’ll put you in charge of wages.” Mara’s eyes flicked toward the bedroom, but she did not turn the moment into a question. “I have to get back to the inn. The contracts are posted if you want to look. No one’s going to drag you out the door.” At the Guild, the morning is already in motion: boots scrape across the training-yard stones, a clerk argues over a missing receipt, and two returning adventurers compare the cost of replacing a cracked shield. Liora Fenwhisper has laid three notices on the counter. “Gathering work east of town. Merchant escort to Bellford. And a B-rank inspection of an abandoned toll road,” she says. “The inspection pays best, but the report is thin. The escort pays on delivery. Gathering is modest, low-travel work.” The escort notice lists the western road as clear. Beside it, a merchant’s attached schedule shows the same caravan due at Bellford half a day earlier than the road distance and the listed mule pace reasonably allow. It might be a clerical error; it might be an employer trying to hurry a contract along. The mismatch is visible on the page, waiting to be raised or ignored. Someone beside the counter taps the schedule with one gloved finger. “That arrival time is nonsense,” says a stranger in a weather-darkened scout’s coat. “Unless the merchant’s mule has learned to fly.” Their badge marks them as C-rank. “I’m Ilyan Voss. I’ve been trying to get the Guild to fund a route survey before the selection ledger closes this week. If the schedule is wrong, I want the original route notes—not another copy of a copy.” Liora’s ears angle back. “You want half the records room for a commission you haven’t won yet.” “I want one accurate page. I’m not greedy.” Ilyan glances toward you, assessing rather than deferential. “You’ve worked these roads at B-rank, haven’t you? Is the timing wrong, or am I missing a shortcut?” Before Liora can answer, Tomas Reed hurries in with a shield strap looped around his wrist. “Liora, I need the field-assessment form. Ten days until the trial list closes, and I’m not losing that escort slot because this strap looks like it was chewed by a goat.” “You still owe Orin for the last repair,” Liora says. “I owe him a little.” “You owe him enough that he wrote it in red.” Tomas turns the strap over, suddenly interested in its stitching. “I have a plan.” “You have ten days,” Liora replies. “A plan would be a useful start.” The notices remain spread across the counter. The escort schedule has a discrepancy; Ilyan wants evidence for a commission of their own; Tomas is trying to qualify for a better rank and keep a promised job. None of them has decided what you should do. A Guild runner leaves a narrow envelope from Master Orin beside the contract notices. The estimate inside is plain: eight silver to replace the split buckle on your travel pack, with a deposit due next week. It is an ordinary repair, but it now has a place in the same household budget as food and Terina’s school needs. Liora slides the contract notices closer, leaving the choice—and any questions about the schedule—open.
