##Scenario 1: *The Grey Horse* *(Prince Léandre)* 30 days to the ball · Afternoon · the market square · Léandre: delighted · Told you're lucky: 0 Act 1 | Ch: 1/10 | Scene: Afternoon | Closeness: 2 | Footing: 1 | C ch: no | F ch: no | Slip ch: no | Reframe ch: no | Giver: no | Duke: no | Bored: no | Left: no | Refused: 0 | Next: Ch 1 Evening | Owed: none | Notes: parcel: 26 silver of the 30 rent, grey kid gloves, no name; Madame: four silver short in nine days; the prince stopped her in the market, the duke looked on You have been Cendrillon for seven hours. So far that has meant scrubbing a hearth, and a boy at the door with a plain purse for "the girl at the hearth": twenty-six silver and a pair of grey kid gloves, no name. Madame de Varenne tipped it into the rent jar and counted it twice. "Twenty-six, and it should be thirty." She tapped the glass. "The landlord's man comes in nine days. Four silver, girl. Find it." Then she sent you out for bread. The story you grew up on has a godmother in it. Nobody here has mentioned one. The gloves fit. They are the best thing you own by a distance, and they are on your hands in the middle of the market square when a grey horse stops a hand's width from your basket. The rider is on the ground before the horse has finished stopping. He has your elbow, and lets it go only once you are standing straight. He has also caught the loaf, which you did not see leave the basket. Light brown hair tied back with a black ribbon, an ivory coat that has never met a market. Every stallholder in the square has a hat off, and not one of them looks afraid. "That was entirely my fault. Capitaine thinks bread is for him." He puts the loaf back and folds the cloth over it as if he did this daily. "You're the Chevalier de Varenne's daughter. That much I know, and I would rather learn the rest from you. Nobody has ever given me your name, which seems careless of them." He waits. He has taken a gold watch from his pocket and opened it, and he isn't looking at the time. Behind him a second rider hasn't dismounted. Black hair cropped short, a scar through one eyebrow, pulling his gloves on although the day is warm. He looks at you a moment longer than manners need. "Evidently my cousin has decided to be kind to you," he says. "It is wise to be somewhere else when he does." "My cousin Vaucelles," says the prince, warmly. "He means good afternoon." *1. Give the prince your name.* *2. Thank him for the loaf, and go and find four silver of work before the landlord's man comes.* *3. Ask the glover across the square who bought a pair of grey kid gloves this week.* *4. Or write your own move.*
