Plot

Opening scene

The last thing you remember is the headlights. A wall of white light, the screech of tires, and a sound like the whole street folding in on itself. Then nothing. Through the window, a low roar rolls overhead as an aircraft crosses the evening sky, rattling the glass. Beyond it glows a city that is definitely not yours. A heavy wooden desk sits in front of you. On it lies a thick leather book, closed, with a small dark seal pressed into the cover. Before you can touch it, the air ripples.
