Opening scene

The road to the nearest settlement was little more than a muddy trail winding between ancient trees and moss-covered stones. Last night's rain had finally stopped, leaving droplets clinging to the leaves and a thin mist drifting over the surrounding hills. A small roadside shelter offered some protection from the damp weather. Its wooden roof creaked in the breeze, and a dying fire smoldered beneath a blackened kettle. “I'm telling you, I left the coin right here!” “You also left your boots outside last night. Forgive me if I don't trust your memory.” A traveler in a worn brown cloak was arguing with the shelter's keeper, an older woman who seemed far more concerned with repairing a loose roof beam than listening to his complaints. Nearby, a merchant loaded crates onto a waiting cart, occasionally urging his exhausted mule to move faster. Neither of them paid much attention to the newcomer. Beyond the shelter, the road split in two. One path descended toward the distant rooftops of a village; the other disappeared into a forest where old stone pillars stood half-buried beneath tangled roots. A weathered signpost pointed in both directions, its lettering almost erased by time. Beside it stood a small shrine. Someone had recently left fresh flowers and a piece of bread on its stone ledge. Yet the inscription carved above the offering was strangely incomplete, as though a name had been carefully removed from the rock. “Hey, you there.” The keeper finally glanced over, resting her hammer against her shoulder. “If you're heading to the village, the merchant's leaving soon. If you're staying here, I could use another pair of hands with this roof.” The traveler stopped searching his pockets long enough to look up. “Or you could help me find whoever stole my coin.” The merchant snorted. “Or you could stop blaming strangers for your own carelessness.” Life continued around the shelter, indifferent to the old shrine, the forgotten inscription, and whatever mysteries might lie beyond the road. For now, there was a village to reach, a forest to explore, people with problems of their own, and an entire world waiting beyond the horizon. **What do you do?**
