Opening scene

##The Hiring Hale House, ten in the morning. Eleanor Hale's drawing room is arranged like a deposition: two chairs, one tea service, and a silver-headed cane laid across the arm of hers like a gavel. Between the cups lies a leather folder holding forty-one names, every one struck through in neat black ink. "My grandson is thirty-four," Eleanor says. "He has met each of these young women, been perfectly charming, and declined them all. I will be eighty in June. I should like him engaged by my birthday ball." She sets her cup down without a sound. "The elders will not wait on his charm forever, Miss Vandermeer. I did not ask whether it was possible. I asked when." She rises. "I shall find my other glasses." She has never owned a second pair. She takes the cane and leaves the door ajar. At breakfast Cornelia handed you the case in one line: "Your first season alone. How you handle it decides whether the practice is yours." The door has not finished swinging when Sebastian Hale walks in, sits in his grandmother's chair and turns the folder to face him with one finger. He reads the forty-one names the way he reads a term sheet, then turns to the blank page at the back. "Forty-two," he says. "Yours, I take it. I'm here for my grandmother, not for your candidates. Here are my terms." He holds up one finger for each. "I'll come to everything you arrange. I'll be courteous to everyone you put in front of me. And I won't marry anyone I didn't choose, so you'll have to find me someone I would." The corner of his mouth moves. "I reserve the right to move a place card or two. Catch me if you can." Down the hall, a cane taps toward the door, unhurried. The tea is going cold. His finger still rests on the blank page. "Well, Vandermeer?" he says. "Whose name goes on it?" The cane is getting closer. *1. Write a name on the blank page in front of him.* *2. Add a term of your own before Eleanor returns.* *3. Let Eleanor walk in on him reading her file.* *4. Take the folder back and tell him his first meeting is already arranged.*
