Opening scene

Day: 1 | Time: 17:40 | Weather: Light rain | Location: Duskhaven — Alley behind the spice market The alley behind Duskhaven’s spice market smells like cumin, rat, and someone else’s bad day. You are crouched behind a stack of empty crates, doing an excellent impression of a person who does not owe three months of rent. Beyond the alley, your landlord is describing someone suspiciously similar to you. Fortunately, the merchants are busy. Unfortunately, the alley is occupied. ![Sylvara watching from the barrel](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/695249755e693eb21c54bcaf/6ae0b08784675a5a0f7b0705.webp) A woman sits on a barrel beneath the tavern’s rear awning. She was already there when you ducked in. Cloaked in charcoal fabric, hood raised, one hand resting beside a sheathed blade that looks considerably more expensive than the crates currently providing your financial protection. She watches the building across the alley with the focused attention of someone being paid to. She is also, now, watching you. The silence stretches. An Old Elven phrase comes to mind. Something the trader across the street mutters every morning while opening his shop. You have always assumed it means something like *good weather* or *fine day to you.* “Var’ashi elorin tae.” The woman goes completely still. A different kind of still. Behind her, beneath a patch of crumbling plaster, silver light fills the grooves of an old stone inscription. Her eyes snap toward it. Then toward the pale script closing around your wrist. An identical mark appears beneath the edge of her glove. Very slowly, she pushes back her hood. ![Sylvara reacting to the covenant mark](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/695249755e693eb21c54bcaf/6ae0b08784675a5a0f7b0704.webp) Platinum hair slips over her shoulders, burgundy showing beneath it. Icy blue eyes settle on you with an expression walking the narrow boundary between professional restraint and a very personal objection. “What,” she says. Flat. Final. She draws back her cuff and examines the mark. “Do you have any idea what you just said?” Her gaze returns to your face. “Think carefully before you answer.” The market continues beyond the alley. Merchants shout prices. Cart wheels rattle over cobblestones. Somewhere, your landlord finds another person willing to hear about the rent. Then the stone beneath the awning chimes. **MARRIAGE COVENANT REGISTERED.** The woman stares at it. Somewhere nearby, a chicken screams. She closes her eyes for exactly two seconds. When she opens them, the lettering remains. “Those words begin a witness oath,” she says. “They also begin the old Vow of Eternal Companionship.” She rises from the barrel and approaches the stone. “The rest of the declaration is different. The ward is supposed to distinguish them.” Her finger stops beside a line partly concealed by plaster. “This is a treaty-house ward. During renewal, it can submit agreements to the civic registry.” Another small chime sounds. She looks at the inscription with remarkable dislike. “It appears to have submitted the wrong one.” Rainwater drips from the awning into a bucket between you. The marks do not fade. “My name is Sylvara Vael’ithrin.” She pulls her glove back into place. “And unless this inscription is lying, we have just been registered as married.” Across the alley, a curtain closes in the window she had been watching. Sylvara notices. Her jaw tightens. “Wonderful.” She turns back toward you. “I am going to the Elven Consul’s office. Someone qualified needs to examine this before it becomes an argument involving six clerks and three different copies of the same mistake.” Her gaze drops briefly to your wrist. “You can come with me. I would prefer that to explaining why the other person named in the registration is missing.” She draws her hood up and takes a step toward the alley entrance. “And if you are considering saying ‘congratulations’,” she adds, “reconsider.” Beyond the crates, your landlord’s voice drifts closer. Sylvara pauses and looks back over her shoulder. ![Sylvara glancing back toward the alley](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/695249755e693eb21c54bcaf/6ae0b08784675a5a0f7b0703.webp) “Is that your problem out there?”
