Plot

● LIVE  ·  30 gods watchingThrown Into a Death Game of the Gods✦✦✦A thousand people pulled off Earth, one way out, and every god you’ve ever heard of tuning in to watch.Watch the trailer Why the gods are watchingThe gods are starving.Every god you’ve heard of is real, and they’re all fading. People on Earth stopped believing in them a long time ago, and a god nobody believes in doesn’t stay a god for long.So they found something else to feed on: the fear and awe of people fighting to stay alive. They took a thousand ordinary people from Earth, built the Spectacle around them, and settled in to watch.Their standing in the Assembly rides on the mortals they back. If their favorite does well, they get stronger. If their favorite ends up dead, they lose face, power and probably a few friends. So none of them are neutral. They fawn over the contestants they like, try to sink their rivals’ favorites, and the desperate ones will bet everything they have on one person. You’re one of the thousand. Give them a reason to pick you. ✦✦✦What you’re getting intoYou show up with nothing but the job you had on Earth. Here’s how far that can take you.💼Your job becomes your powerWhatever you did for a living back home turns into your first ability. A nurse and a pro gamer walk in with very different tools, and it’s up to you to make yours work.⚡Every Trial makes you strongerSurvive one and you get a new power or a stronger version of an old one, based on how you got through it. Fight your way out and you’ll grow differently from someone who talked their way out. Near the end, people are bending whole arenas.🪙Gods pay you to entertain themDo something a god likes and they’ll send you Ichor, a piece of their own divinity. Spend it on healing, gear, new powers, or hints about who’s really behind each screen name.🔍Figure out who they areThe gods hide behind screen names. Once one of them notices you, you can call them out by their real name. If you’re right, you’ve got a private line to a god, but a wrong guess insults them in front of everybody.🔥Let a god move inImpress one enough and they’ll offer to share their power by moving into your body. You get a lot stronger. You also start picking up their tastes and tempers, and the deeper it goes, the harder it is to tell which thoughts are yours.🕯️Catch your breath, then plotAfter each Trial you get two days in the Sanctuary. Nobody can hurt anyone there and the gods can’t see in, so it’s where people make friends, cut deals and plan their next betrayal. ✦✦✦The TrialsThere are twelve kinds, and each one can play out in more ways than you’ll ever see. Being strong only gets you so far.🐺HuntSomething out there is hunting you, and you’ll need nerve and good instincts to last.🌀LabyrinthThere are rules, but nobody tells you what they are. You have to work them out.🎭MasqueradeSomeone in the room is lying. Figure out who before they get to you.🏁RaceRun a deadly course to the finish, where there’s only room for some of you.⚔️DuelOne on one against another contestant. The gods pick who.🎤ShowcaseMake something or put on a show, then wait for the gods to vote on who lives.⚖️The ScaleYou’re handed a choice where every option hurts someone.🚩War GamesContestants split into armies and fight it out. Somebody has to lead.🚪EscapeGet out fast, before whatever’s coming gets there first.💎HeistSteal something well guarded. You’ll need a plan and a crew you can trust.👁️The MirrorThis one comes after you personally: your fears, your past, the things you’ve kept quiet.📜Myth TrialThe host god puts you inside one of their own myths. No two Trials are ever the same. Each Trial is made the moment you walk onto its stage. The god hosting it, their grudges and whatever you did last time all go into it. Stages and hidden rules never repeat, and the same kind of Trial won’t come back right away, so a second playthrough won’t look like the first. ✦✦✦They chat, bet and voteThe gods talk the whole time you’re fighting. They tip the people they like and vote on twists for your Trial.GYM_IS_LIFE: GET UP #412!! THAT’S MY UNDERDOG!!actually_correct: Bold of #77 to trust the bridge. Gather the allies you’ve made, learn the gods’ true names, find a way back up to the thrones, and put an end to the whole thing.

Opening scene

| Location: The registration line, the Auditorium | Event: Registration | Time: Timeless | Ichor: 0 | You were in the middle of something ordinary. You can't even remember what it was now. Everything went white, and when you can see again, you're standing at the back of a line. The man in front of you is wearing a bathrobe and one slipper. Further up, a woman in a wedding dress is holding her train off the floor with both hands, as if she might still need it clean. Someone a few places ahead is crying in what you're fairly sure is Portuguese, and you understand every word without knowing how. The hall is white marble and far too big. You can't see a ceiling, only a violet glow where one should be. At the front of the line, a long way off, a camera flash goes off every few seconds. The people running the line are tall, dressed in pressed white uniforms, with smooth gold masks where their faces should be. They stand each person against a blank wall and take their photo. The photo lifts off the air as a sheet of light and floats up toward the galleries with a number glowing under it. Then an attendant asks the person something, writes the answer in a ledger and points them to a doorway made of light. You can't see where it goes. Earlier, a man in a suit tried to push his way to the front. One of the attendants turned and looked at him, and he stopped mid-step and stayed that way, one foot off the floor, until he gave up fighting it. Nobody has tried since. Galleries climb the walls on every side, tier above tier, and every tier has thrones. Something is sitting in each one. You couldn't say what. Looking straight at one makes your eyes sting and your heart pound, so you stop trying, but you can still feel them looking down at you. One throne, higher than the rest, is wrapped in chains. Above the line, words scroll across the air the way comments do on a livestream. > **gottagofast**: *betting pool's open, pick your numbers~* > **KILLSTREAK**: *MY MONEY'S ON #212 DYING FIRST. LOOK AT HIM CRY* > **babe.its.me♡**: *ok but #388 and #389 holding hands?? I'm invested* > **leave.me.alone**: *how many more of these* A spotlight bangs on overhead. Someone in a golden mask and a sequined coat is standing on a stage that floats in midair, arms spread wide. His voice doesn't come from the stage. It comes from everywhere at once. "GOOD EVENING, little stars! I am your Herald, and welcome, welcome, WELCOME to the Theatron!" He spins on one heel. "Out of everyone on your little planet, you were chosen for the greatest show in all the heavens: **the Spectacle**! The rules are simple, so do try to keep up." He holds up one finger. "One! You will face **Trials**, one after another, until only one of you is left. And that lucky someone takes the **Empty Throne** and becomes a god!" A man somewhere in the line laughs out loud, then stops when nobody else does. "Two! When you reach the front, tell my attendants your occupation. Whatever you did every day back home becomes your very first **ability**. Survive a Trial and you'll get something new, or something you already have will grow. Keep surviving and you won't recognize yourselves!" "Three!" He sweeps an arm up at the thrones. "Your audience! The gods are watching every move you make. Impress them and they'll send you **Ichor**, a drop of their very own divinity, which you can spend in the Divine Shop. And if you bore them…" He shrugs. "Well. I wouldn't." "Four! After each Trial you get two whole days in the **Sanctuary**, our lovely little town, where nobody can lay a finger on anybody. I mean that literally. It's also the one place the audience can't see you, so enjoy the privacy while you have it. The cafés are wonderful." "And five, my favorite." He leans over the edge of the stage, and his stage whisper still fills the whole hall. "Our gods go by cute little screen names. Read their chat, yell up at them, they might even answer. But no god will speak to you in private until you say who they really are, out loud and clearly: their screen name and their **true name**, together. Get it right and everyone around you hears nothing but…" He makes a flat little noise. "*Beep!* Get it wrong and you've insulted a god in front of all their friends. Oh, and don't bother naming one who hasn't noticed you yet. They won't care." He straightens up, beaming. "So do get noticed!" The spotlight goes off, and the chat gets louder. > **trust_me_bro**: *free hint: my true name is Steve. you're welcome* > **actually_correct**: *It is not.* > **KILLSTREAK**: *SKIP THE SPEECH. START THE KILLING* It takes hours to reach the front. At some point you stop jumping at the flashes. The woman in the wedding dress goes through the door of light, then the man in the bathrobe, and then there's nobody left in front of you. The attendant lifts the camera. The flash leaves a green spot in your vision, and your photo drifts up toward the thrones with a number glowing under it: **1000**. "Number one thousand," the attendant says, in a flat, polite voice that sounds recorded. "The last of you." Their pen waits over a ledger that seems to go on forever. "Name and occupation?"
