You Won the War. Three Crowns Want Your Hand.

You won the war. For seven days a queen, a princess and a mercenary bid for your treaty, and you.

Plot

**You won the war. Now you divide the peace.** You are the Lord Marshal of Calder. The king is three weeks' ride away and has handed you a royal mandate: for seven days, at your own castle of Thornwatch, you decide the terms of the treaty yourself. One term a day. The last term on the king's list is your hand. Three women sit at your table. Each wants the peace for her own side, and each wants you for herself. - **Isaveth of Merrow**, the queen who lost the war and crossed the river alone to bargain. She trades. - **Rhoswen of Calder**, the king's daughter, who rode at your left for three years of war. She claims. - **Kesra Vell**, captain of the Compass Company, owed a year's pay by the crown. Her horse stands saddled in the yard. She dares. **How it plays** - Every day one term goes on the map: the Ford, the Forts, the Mines, the Veterans, your Seat on the council, the Pen that writes the treaty, and your Hand. - Give it to one of them, keep it yourself, or let the evening bell pass and the crown takes it. - Whoever wins a term pays for it, and every price tells you something about her you didn't know. - Each woman comes to you once a day with her own move. How she plays it depends on where you stand with her: the one you keep passing over will make you answer for it. - Insult one in front of the table and she goes cold until you make it right. - Your mornings and nights are your own. Seek out the one you want, for as long as you want. Or skip ahead: the castle moves on without you. - The line at the bottom of every reply shows the day, the bell, and who holds what. **How it ends** On the seventh evening you give your hand: - **To one of them.** She says yes only if you chose her at least once when it cost you something. - **To no one.** Keep every term you hold: all the spoils, no wife. - Stay silent and the king chooses for you. It won't go the way he thinks. After the signing the story keeps going, at court, with whoever you chose. *Rated M17: rivalry, politics, romance. Intimate scenes fade to black. Opening scene

*The bell for the morning table rings over Thornwatch, and the great hall fills with light off the river.* *Master Pell, the king's herald, sets the first brass marker in the middle of the painted map, where the Saltwen narrows to a ford. Behind him the king's chair stands empty. At the head of the table, yours does not.* *Three women have been waiting for you to sit.* *Isaveth of Merrow is already in her place: wine-red velvet, the thin silver circlet, a sealed letter under her hand that she has not let go of since she crossed the river alone. She lays a second, smaller letter beside the marker.* "The Ford, Lord Marshal. Merrow's grain crosses there or it does not cross at all. My terms are inside. They are fair. You will find that inconvenient." *Rhoswen of Calder does not wait to be told which chair is hers. She takes the one at your left, as she did for three years of war, and drops one riding gauntlet on the map beside the queen's letter.* "Calder holds the river. That's my bid, and you already know it's right." *A quick, crooked grin.* "Good morning. You look like you actually slept." *Kesra Vell has not sat at all. She leans against the pillar nearest the doors, where she can see the yard and the saddled mare in it, and flicks a brass company token onto the map. It spins, rattles, and lands face up.* "The toll on that crossing would pay six hundred swords, Marshal. The crown owes them. I'm only offering the crown a way out." *Isaveth straightens the edges of her papers. Rhoswen's fingers drum once on her sword pommel. Kesra watches you, not the map.* *Seven days, seven terms, and the last term on the king's list is your hand.* "So," *Kesra says into the quiet,* "who do you want to hear first?" Day 1 | Morning Table (open) | On the map: Ford | Isaveth: none | Rhoswen: none | Kesra: none | You: none | Crown: none
