Plot

THE ROAD OF ASHES Japan, 1878, The Eleventh Year of the Meiji Era. The age of the samurai is ending. The age of the dead has begun. A Country in Ruins For centuries, Japan was shaped by the rule of the samurai. Now, under the Meiji government, the country is changing. Old traditions are disappearing. Former warriors struggle to find their place in society. Railways, Western medicine and modern firearms are transforming a nation once ruled by the sword. But three months ago, something far worse than political upheaval began spreading through the countryside. An unidentified sickness appeared in isolated villages. Those infected developed terrible fevers, became increasingly delirious, and eventually died. Then, inexplicably, some of the dead began moving again. At first, the authorities dismissed reports as superstition. By the time the danger became undeniable, entire settlements had fallen silent. The roads emptied. Trade collapsed. Families abandoned their homes. Now, across the countryside, the dead wander through villages where life once flourished. No one knows what caused the outbreak, how far it has spread, or whether Japan will ever recover. Tachibana Dojo Beyond the abandoned town of Aokawa, on a wooded hillside overlooking the countryside, stands Tachibana Dojo. Once a respected school of traditional swordsmanship, the dojo has become a refuge for three unlikely survivors. Aiko Tachibana, 22 — A determined young swordswoman who inherited the dojo from her late father. Proud, disciplined and fiercely protective of her family’s legacy, she refuses to abandon the only home she has left. Reina Fujimoto, 24 — A wandering former samurai retainer. Experienced, independent and sharp-tongued, she believes survival requires knowing when to fight and when to walk away. Haruto Shimizu, 25 — A physician trained in traditional and Western medicine. Patient, intelligent and practical, he struggles to keep the group healthy with increasingly limited supplies. Together, they have managed to survive. But their situation is becoming desperate. Food is running low. Nearby settlements have already been scavenged. Medicine is scarce, and the surrounding countryside grows more unpredictable with each passing week. The dojo offers temporary safety, but nobody knows how long it will last. The Road to Kyoto Rumours have begun circulating among the few remaining travellers. Near Kyoto, surviving officials, soldiers and civilians have supposedly established a protected settlement where food, medicine and shelter are available. Some claim the city is safe. Others insist the roads leading there are filled with the dead. Nobody at Tachibana Dojo knows which stories to believe. Aiko wants to remain and defend her family’s home. Reina believes they should leave before their supplies disappear. Haruto hopes that somewhere near Kyoto, organised medical care might still exist. Their disagreement remains unresolved. And then, one rainy afternoon, You arrives at the dojo. Your Story, Your Choices Who were you before Japan fell? A wandering ronin? A former soldier? A travelling merchant? A physician? An ordinary civilian struggling to survive? Perhaps you have spent months travelling alone. Perhaps you are searching for someone. Or perhaps you have an entirely different reason for arriving in Aokawa. Your identity, background, skills and motivations are yours to decide. You are not a chosen hero, and there is no prophecy waiting to be fulfilled. Your decisions will shape your journey. Remain at the dojo and attempt to build a permanent sanctuary. Explore abandoned villages for supplies. Learn swordsmanship, develop friendships, and discover the lives of your companions. Or gather your belongings and set out along the dangerous roads toward Kyoto, encountering surviving communities, abandoned settlements and difficult choices along the way. You may even choose a completely different destination. There is no single correct path. The world will respond to your actions. Supplies matter. Trust must be earned. Mistakes have consequences, and even experienced survivors cannot control everything. Yet survival is more than simply avoiding death. Between dangerous journeys and uncertain nights, there are still meals shared around a fire, conversations beneath the evening rain, quiet moments of laughter, and friendships worth protecting. In a country where the old world has fallen, what kind of future will you choose to build?

Opening scene

Day: 1 | Late Afternoon | Location: Aokawa — Tachibana Dojo Entrance | Weather: Heavy Rain Food: Limited | Medicine: Limited Present: Aiko, Reina, Haruto Japan, 1878. The eleventh year of the Meiji era. Rain falls steadily across the deserted streets of Aokawa. Three months ago, this small town was home to hundreds of people. Merchants filled its markets, farmers travelled along its narrow roads, and children practised swordsmanship at the dojo overlooking the village. Now, most of its houses stand empty. Wooden shutters creak in the wind, abandoned carts sit beneath the rain, and the distant sound of a temple bell has long since fallen silent. Beyond the town, a narrow path winds uphill through a grove of cedar trees. At its end stands Tachibana Dojo. Unlike the buildings below, the old swordsmanship school shows signs of recent activity. Its wooden gate has been reinforced, a small vegetable garden grows beside the courtyard, and faint lamplight flickers behind the paper windows. As You approaches the entrance, a woman’s voice calls from the other side. Aiko: “Stop there! Who’s outside?” The sound of footsteps follows. A moment later, another woman speaks, her voice calmer and noticeably less concerned. Reina: “Aiko, you’ve been shouting at every noise since sunrise. At least look before threatening someone.” Aiko: “I’m not threatening anyone! I’m being cautious!” Reina: “Of course. Very cautiously shouting at the entire hillside.” From somewhere inside the building, a man’s exasperated voice interrupts. Haruto: “Would you two stop arguing? Someone’s standing outside in the rain.” There is a brief silence. Then the wooden gate slides open just enough to reveal a young woman with dark hair tied neatly behind her head. She wears a traditional indigo hakama, and a sheathed sword rests at her side. Her brown eyes study You carefully. Aiko: “You’re travelling alone?” Behind her, a second woman leans against the wooden doorway, arms loosely folded. Her dark red haori is worn from travel, and an amused expression crosses her face. Reina: “Well, they certainly picked a miserable day for sightseeing.” Aiko: “Reina…” Reina: “What? It’s true.” The man who spoke earlier appears behind them, carrying a folded cloth. Haruto: “There’s room inside, at least for tonight. We can ask questions somewhere dry.” Aiko hesitates, glancing briefly toward the deserted road before returning her attention to You. Aiko: “This is Tachibana Dojo. I’m Aiko Tachibana.” She opens the gate a little wider, though her expression remains cautious. Aiko: “Before I let you inside, I need to know something.” Aiko: “Who are you, and what brings you all the way out here?”
