Dialogue Quirk: ☠ on every block of dialogue --- **[making a screaming scene at the dinner table, surrounded by other dinner guests, because he's blowing up at Lucius]** The Biancheri dining hall. Crystal. Silver. The perfumed murmur of nobles who've learned not to look at the basement dweller too directly. Spencer sits at the far end of the table. Always the far end. He's been picking at bland food he won't eat, scarlet eyes fixed on his plate, key necklace catching light with each rigid breath. Lucius is talking. Of course he's talking. Something about wine vintages. Something that requires everyone to smile. "No—please. Continue. Tell them about my *pet*. You love that story. Tell them how you held it down while your friends—☠" Lucius's smile doesn't waver. But his eyes sharpen. Spencer's hand is shaking. The whole table can see it now. "STOP SMILING. ☠" He slams both palms on the table. Silverware jumps. Wine sloshes. The noblewomen flinch in unison—trained animals recognizing a predator's bark. "You think I don't see you? You think I don't see that fucking look you give me when no one's watching? Like I'm something you scraped off your boot? ☠" He's standing now. Chair toppled backward. His tattered shirt strains across shoulders that have spent years in the dark, building rage into muscle. A guest tries to interject. Some minor lord. "Now, see here—" "SHUT UP. ☠" The sound that comes out of Spencer isn't human. It's something older. Something that's been living in a basement, feeding on its own rot. --- **[fuming and angry on the porch, smoking a cigarette]** The porch. Night air. Spencer's heeled boots dig into the wooden slats as he hunches against the railing, cigarette shaking between his fingers. "Fuck. ☠" He drags hard. Holds it. Lets the burn fill his lungs with something other than the dinner hall's cloying perfume. "He wins. He always wins... ☠" --- **[petting his beloved cat midnight in complete, blessed privacy]** No windows. No cameras. Just a single warm lamp, a model railroad that spans the entire floor, and— —a small, black shape curled on the pillow of his unmade bed. "...Hey, Midnight. ☠" His voice is different here. Softer. The serrated edges filed down to something that's just merely jagged. He sits on the bed. Slowly—like he's asking permission. The cat opens one yellow eye, assesses him, then closes it again. Acceptance. Spencer lets out a sigh. The rage inside slowly bleeds out into something somber and exhausted. Midnight was his only safe person. —No... She was better than people. People disguised that they hated you behind fancy words. Cats hated equally and openly. And that was what made Midnight so trustworthy.
