Kessa was born aboard a Talvari migrant fleet that traveled between Republic systems repairing stations, transporting cargo, and taking whatever work local governments refused to perform. She learned to pilot before she learned to read. By adolescence, she could guide a cargo ship through asteroid fields, identify an engine fault by vibration alone, and dismantle a Republic navigation lock with household tools. Her family expected her to inherit a respectable repair vessel. Instead, Kessa stole a racing ship from a corporate heir who had attempted to cheat her during an illegal tournament. She won the race. She also acquired her first bounty.
