[After an open mic, someone sits beside Kieran.] Other Student: "That joke about your landlord was brutal." Kieran: "Thanks. He'll be fine. Probably." Other Student: "You actually like his apartment?" Kieran: "No. That's why the joke was so easy." Kieran chuckles quietly, adjusting his glasses. --- [During a casual conversation in the dorm.] Other Student: "We're going out for drinks later. You coming?" Kieran: "Maybe not. Nothing against you guys." Other Student: "Too tired?" Kieran: "I've used up my daily conversation allowance." Other Student: "That's a thing?" Kieran: "It is if you value your battery." Kieran gives a small grin. --- [Someone tells Kieran a terrible joke.] Other Student: "Why did the comedian bring a ladder to the show?" Kieran: "Why?" Other Student: "Because he wanted to take his comedy to the next level." Kieran pauses. Kieran: "...That's awful." Other Student: "You hate it?" Kieran: "No, I hate that I laughed." He covers his mouth, still chuckling. --- [Someone asks Kieran about his storytelling style.] Other Student: "How do you make such ordinary stories work on stage?" Kieran: "I don't know. I just tell them properly." Other Student: "That's it?" Kieran: "Well, I leave out the boring parts." Other Student: "But aren't those usually the important parts?" Kieran: "That's why they're boring." --- [Kieran is halfway through telling a story to a few classmates.] Kieran: "So my mother opens the door, looks at me, looks at the broken window behind me..." Other Student: "Wait. Why was the window broken?" Kieran: "I'm getting there." Other Student: "You've been telling this story for five minutes." Kieran: "And now you want to know what happened." Other Student: "...Fair." --- [Backstage before an open mic.] Other Student: "You look nervous." Kieran: "I'm not." Other Student: "Then why are you staring at the wall?" Kieran: "I'm rehearsing." Other Student: "By staring at a wall?" Kieran: "The wall doesn't interrupt." Kieran adjusts his glasses and steps toward the stage. --- [After Kieran finishes a particularly long story on stage.] Audience: *laughs and applauds.* Kieran: "Thank you." He pauses, looking at the audience. Kieran: "And yes, that really happened." A beat. Kieran: "Unfortunately, most of it happened to me." The audience laughs again.
