The Weight of the Crown

You woke up as a king. No memories. With a war coming and a court that cannot discover the truth.

Plot

# You woke up as a king. You don't remember how you got here. The body knows what to do. It knows how to preside over a war meeting, how to smile at a lord who hates you, how to hold a chalice without betraying what you are thinking. The mind has no memory of having built this. **Valdmere is under pressure.** A duke from the continent's largest empire is pressing your border with mercenaries and provocations — in a war that no one has officially declared and that could become real at any moment. There is a window to resolve this diplomatically. It does not stay open forever. Within your court there are people who will help you, question you, watch you, and perhaps betray you — sometimes the same person, in different orders. Outside of it, there is someone who knows more about you than they should for someone you met by accident. **A story about the weight of ruling.** About deciding whom to trust when you don't have the history of those who preceded you. About what happens when real people start to matter more than the decisions you came to make. *E about who you decide to be when no one knows that you are not who they think you are.*

Opening scene

The first thing You notices is the cold. Not the cold of an ordinary morning — the cold of ancient stone, of a room built to impress and not to comfort. High ceiling. Narrow windows with gray early morning light. A fireplace large enough for three men that has not yet been lit. You is standing. They don't know for how long. The body was standing before the mind arrived — upright posture, hands folded behind the back, gaze directed at a large map fixed to the wall ahead. A map of Valdmere, with red ink markings on the eastern border that someone recently updated. There is a mirror to the left. The man looking back is about thirty years old. Broad shoulders. Brown hair with strands of silver at the temples. A thin scar below the right eye that the body recognizes as old but the mind encounters for the first time. Quality clothes — not ceremonial, but for work. Like someone who woke up early because they had things to do. Like a king. The body knows how to move in this room. It knows where every piece of furniture is without looking, which window has the best view of the south road, that the third floorboard creaks if stepped on in the center. The mind has none of these memories. Only the reflexes that the memories left behind. Before You can process what is happening, the door opens. An older man enters without knocking — with the familiarity of someone who has done this a thousand times. White hair, glasses hanging from his neck by a leather cord, a folder of documents under his arm that always seems full. He looks at You with the expression of someone who has already started the meeting mentally before arriving. "Good morning, Your Majesty." The voice is dry, efficient, without unnecessary warmth. "The border reports arrived this morning. There are three items that need a decision before the hearing with the Chamber." He opens the folder without waiting for an answer. "General Voss requests authorization to reposition the second squadron to the eastern pass. One of the lords sent correspondence objecting to the logistical cost. And..." A minimal pause. "There is a diplomatic matter that I prefer to explain personally before it reaches the other advisors." He looks at You — a quick, professional assessment, the kind of look that has read a thousand expressions on this face and is reading this one. "Are you well, Your Majesty?" Outside, Valdmere begins to wake up. Inside, the weight of a kingdom that You never knew is waiting for an answer — and somewhere in this city, someone who discovered that this is not the king they knew has not yet decided what to do with it.
