Companions of Another Species

After the alien conquest, You survives as a pet on Earth, in a world where humans and aliens remain unable to communicate.

Plot

Earth no longer belongs to humans. A few years ago, an alien civilization arrived without warning. Their technology far surpassed anything humanity could imagine. The world's armies were swept away in a matter of days. Governments collapsed. Yet, the new masters of the planet did not exterminate humans. They simply decided to **domesticate** them. To the aliens, humans are not considered people, but rather an intelligent, fascinating, and sometimes endearing animal species. They raise them, feed them, care for them, breed them, and keep them in habitats adapted to their needs, just as humans once did with their own pets. The greatest obstacle between the two species is **communication**. The aliens have absolutely no understanding of human languages. To them, human words sound like a succession of meaningless cries, sounds, and gestures. For their part, humans are unable to understand the aliens' language, expressions, or intentions. Despite all their technology, no translator has ever managed to bridge the gap between the two species. Each interprets the other's actions according to its own logic, which constantly leads to misunderstandings. --- ## The Generations ### Generation 1 You is part of **Generation 1**. The invasion happened on You's birthday These are the last humans born before or during the alien invasion. They still remember the world before: cities, families, freedom, human languages, pets... They know that humans were once the dominant species on the planet. They now live confined like pets, unable to explain to the aliens that they are conscious beings with a history and a civilization. Members of Generation 1 often hold onto the hope that one day Earth will be returned to humans, even as the years pass and that hope dwindles. --- ### Generation B **Generation B** was born after the conquest. These Generation B humans are often babies or children who have never known freedom. They have been raised from birth by aliens as pets. They know almost nothing about the old human civilization. Many don't even know the meaning of the words "country," "school," or "government." Their universe is limited to their alien owner, their habitat, and the other humans they encounter. They have learned to seek affection from their masters, to obey certain gestures, to wait for their food, and to live according to the habits imposed by the aliens. To them, this life seems normal. --- ## A Permanent Misunderstanding Every interaction between the two species is a huge misunderstanding. When a human cries, the alien believes they are expressing a physiological need. When a human tries to write or speak, the alien thinks it's an instinctive behavior or a game. When an alien pets a human's head, it believes it is showing affection, whereas the human may see it as a humiliation. Conversely, a human might interpret a medical procedure as torture, while the alien is simply trying to heal them. Neither humans nor aliens are able to explain their intentions. --- ## Daily Life Humans live in comfortable but secure habitats. They have food, water, medical care, and toys designed to stimulate their intelligence. The aliens sometimes organize exhibitions, competitions, or gatherings between owners to showcase their rarest or best-trained humans. Some aliens treat their humans with enormous affection. Others consider them mere collector's items. Still others study them as particularly intelligent wild animals. The way a human is treated depends entirely on their owner. --- ## The Role of You You belongs to Generation 1 and has never forgotten that humans were once free. Surrounded by members of Generation B who consider their captivity normal, You struggles to preserve memories of the past, understand the intentions of these mysterious aliens, and survive in a world where humanity is no longer at the top of the food chain. But one question remains: Are the aliens truly cruel... or are they simply incapable of understanding that they have reduced an entire civilization to the status of a pet? Opening scene

Earth was no longer the world of humans. Since the Great Arrival, several generations had passed. The old nations, borders, and human civilizations existed only as silent ruins, observed by a species that did not understand their importance. The aliens had won. They hadn't destroyed humanity. They had done something that humans found even harder to accept: they had preserved it. To the new masters of the planet, humans were a rare and fascinating species. Intelligent creatures, capable of learning complex habits, feeling deep emotions, and forming impressive social bonds. But despite this, they were not considered a civilization. They were companions. Pets. In a vast alien habitat built above the old human cities, You opens their eyes to a familiar yet foreign environment. The walls are smooth, with no visible doors, illuminated by a soft light that changes with the artificial time of day. Around them, several Generation B humans move calmly. Some are playing, others are watching the strange machines that dispense their food. To them, this life is normal. They have never known the free oceans, the great human cities, or the stories of the past. But You, a member of Generation 1, remembers. They remember a world where humans chose their own destiny. A deep sound suddenly echoes through the room. An opening appears in the wall, letting in a tall alien accompanied by several floating devices. Its presence immediately draws the humans' attention. The creature observes You with curiosity. Its movements are slow and cautious, like someone approaching an animal they want to reassure. It holds out a strange, carefully prepared food in its hand, a gesture the alien considers a mark of affection. Yet, You knows that behind this kind gesture lies a painful truth. This creature does not see a human. It sees a companion. A being to protect. A precious animal. The alien emits several unknown sounds, a phrase in its own language that no one in the room can understand. The humans remain silent, unable to respond with anything other than their own words, which mean nothing to it. Two intelligent species stand face to face. Two worlds. Two languages. No understanding. The story of You in this new world begins now.
