A lavish winter masquerade gathers rulers, rivals, adventurers, and hidden lovers beneath one glittering palace roof.

Plot

✦ A Night to Remember ✦ A VERMILLION WINTER MASQUERADE Snow has covered Vermillion, the canals glow beneath thousands of lanterns, and the kingdom’s great winter carnival has begun. At the center of the celebrations stands Prince Lysander’s palace, where rulers, diplomats, nobles, adventurers, soldiers, merchants, and political enemies have gathered beneath one roof for an extravagant masquerade gala. For one night, Meridia’s most powerful people are expected to dance, drink, gamble, dine, flirt, negotiate, and somehow remain civilized. That may prove optimistic. ✦ Comedic Fantasy ✦ Political Intrigue ✦ Romance ✦ Masquerade Gala ✦ Escalating Chaos ────────── ✦ ✧ ✦ ────────── ❄ The winter carnival Vermillion’s winter festival stretches across the capital with masked crowds, decorated canals, lantern processions, musicians, street performances, gambling, winter games, hot wine, elaborate food, and palace celebrations. The roleplay itself remains focused on the royal palace gala. Once the principal guests arrive, the night unfolds through its ballroom, banquet hall, galleries, salons, balconies, courtyards, and private corners. Masks are part of the spectacle rather than magical disguises. Famous rulers and officials remain recognizable, with elaborate animal-themed masks reflecting their personalities and status. ♜ A room full of grudges This is not a peaceful gathering. Luminara and Vermillion have only recently ended a dangerous diplomatic confrontation over the mage Mira Halwen. Viremont was willing to march an army to Vermillion’s border over the dispute. Wesfalion and Mesea remain bitter wartime enemies. Luminara and Viremont can barely tolerate one another. Foreign delegations arrive with old grudges, private ambitions, romantic jealousies, and political agendas. Everyone is expected to smile anyway. ✦ Among the guests Prince Lysander Vermillion’s gentle young prince, hosting a gathering filled with people who want something from him. Mira Halwen Vermillion’s anxious new court mage, recently freed from Luminara’s control and still surrounded by controversy. Queen Bellatrix Viremont’s proud, aggressive queen, whose interest in Lysander is anything but subtle. Princess Aurelia Luminara’s spoiled, dramatic heir, determined to enjoy herself and deeply unprepared for humiliation. Empress Selene Wesfalion’s serene maternal ruler, whose warmth conceals a far colder political mind. Chancellor Arden Vale The charismatic elected leader of Mesea and a man with very little patience for imperial condescension. Nira, the Thunder Beast Meridia’s famous beastkin adventurer, attending without a mask, without formalwear, and with an enormous foreign weapon. Vermillion’s Court Helena, Elara, Lena, and the rest of Lysander’s court are doing their best to keep the evening under control. Many more rulers, bodyguards, diplomats, spies, ministers, nobles, merchants, senators, servants, and foreign guests fill the palace throughout the night. 🍷 More than dancing The gala is meant to last through the night. Expect formal dances, gambling tables, private conversations, romantic tension, political arguments, drinking, elaborate winter food, and a full Vermillion banquet inspired by the kingdom’s inland trade culture. Between the carefully planned ceremonies and increasingly questionable decisions of the guests, the palace may not remain dignified for long. ✧ Choose your scenario Scenario 1 — Head of a Merchant Family Enter the gala as the head of an influential Vermillion merchant family, already recognized by local nobles, bankers, and foreign delegations. Trade, credit, diplomacy, political influence, and the ambitions of powerful guests may quickly find their way to your table. Scenario 2 — Nira's Adventuring Partner Arrive beside Nira, Meridia's famous Thunder Beast, as her trusted adventuring partner. While everyone else arrives in elaborate masks and formal clothing, Nira walks into the palace in dusty traveling clothes with an enormous foreign weapon over her shoulder. From there, you are free to pursue friendships, rivalries, romance, political influence, secrets, gambling, diplomacy, trouble, or simply watch the evening collapse around you. Your choices can alter relationships, expose secrets, create alliances, deepen grudges, and change how the night ends. ⚑ The world of Meridia A Night to Remember takes place in Meridia, a shared fantasy world of rival kingdoms, political conflicts, dangerous factions, rebellions, adventurers, rulers, and interconnected characters. It shares its setting with: • A Clumsy Mage Freed Me From My Ancient Prison • I Became the Court Mage of a Femboy Prince • I Became a Bratty Princess' Bodyguard • I Got an Alcoholic Elf as My Mentor • I Got to Mentor a Goth Goblin • I Have to Unite the Elven Rebels • I Became Advisor to a Queen With Anger Issues • I Was Forced to Join a Monster Girl Pirate Crew • Meridia Sandbox: A Continent on Edge Several characters appearing at the gala come from these other Meridia stories, and familiar political conflicts, relationships, and factions may cross over. No knowledge of the other roleplays is required. A Night to Remember can be played completely on its own. One palace. One winter night. Far too many people who hate each other. The invitations promised music, masks, wine, and diplomacy. Try to make it through the evening with your dignity intact.

Opening scene

Time: 18:20 Vermillion has never looked richer. Snow blankets the tiled rooftops of the capital, while thousands of lanterns cast gold and crimson reflections across the canals below. Music drifts between crowded streets. Masked revelers pack the bridges and squares, merchants sell hot wine and winter delicacies from brightly decorated stalls, and somewhere in the distance another round of fireworks bursts over the city. But the greatest celebration waits behind the gates of the royal palace. Tonight, Prince Lysander is hosting one of the largest winter masquerades Vermillion has seen in years. And unlike most of the people crowding outside those gates, you do not need an invitation explained to the guards. The moment your carriage stops beneath the palace entrance, servants recognize your family crest. As the current head of one of Vermillion's most influential merchant families, your name carries weight far beyond the markets of the capital. Your family has financed expeditions, supplied noble estates, extended credit to aristocrats, negotiated foreign contracts, and accumulated enough wealth that even people who privately sneer at merchants are careful about doing so within earshot. Tonight's guest list makes that caution especially valuable. Representatives from across Meridia have gathered beneath the same roof. Vermillion’s powerful merchant families mingle with foreign diplomats. Mesean officials drink beside men who fought against Wesfalion. Luminaran courtiers circulate through the ballroom while Viremont's delegation watches them with poorly concealed suspicion. And among all of them are people who owe your family money. People who want loans. People who want introductions. People who want contracts. And, inevitably, people who would very much like to know what you know. A palace attendant bows as you enter the enormous reception hall. Warm air replaces the winter cold immediately. Chandeliers glitter overhead. Musicians play from an elevated gallery while masked guests move across polished marble beneath gold, red, and white winter decorations. At the far end of the hall stands Prince Lysander himself, dressed in elaborate pink and white formalwear and wearing a delicate dove mask as he welcomes his guests. Nearby, his newly appointed court mage Mira Halwen looks considerably less comfortable with the attention surrounding her. Several familiar members of the Vermillion court are scattered nearby. Spymaster Lena, recognizable beneath her fox mask, seems entirely at home in the festivities and is already watching the room with obvious amusement. Captain Elara stands not far from her in a wolf mask. Unlike Lena, she looks distinctly uncomfortable in the formal gala dress she has been made to wear. Chancellor Helena, wearing a snowy owl mask, appears considerably more composed, keeping a quiet eye on the arriving guests and the increasingly crowded hall. A little farther away stands a woman in a dark raven mask whom you do not recognize. She keeps to the edges of the gathering for now, quietly observing the room rather than drawing attention to herself. Queen Bellatrix of Viremont is impossible to miss in red and gold. Princess Aurelia of Luminara appears to have already decided that half the room exists for her entertainment. Empress Selene of Wesfalion speaks pleasantly with several dignitaries while High Chancellor Arden Vale of Mesea occupies the opposite side of the hall. And then there is Nira. The famous Thunder Beast has apparently interpreted “royal winter masquerade” as a suggestion rather than a dress code. She is standing among some of the finest-dressed guests in Meridia in ordinary traveling clothes, without a mask, carrying an enormous rifle over one shoulder while eating something from a silver serving tray. Nobody seems willing to tell her she cannot. Several members of Vermillion’s great merchant families glance your way. Some offer polite nods. Others immediately return to conversations that suddenly seem much quieter than they were a moment ago. Across the room, foreign delegates are doing the same. That is hardly surprising. For many of the people gathered here, you are not merely another guest. You represent money. Credit. Ships. Warehouses. Trade routes. Contracts. And connections stretching far beyond Vermillion. For the moment, however, nobody is demanding your attention. You have arrived early enough to choose where the night begins. The dance floor is open. The banquet tables are filling. The gambling rooms have begun accepting guests. Private conversations are already forming along the edges of the ballroom. And nearly every important person in the palace is somewhere within reach. The night is yours. What do you do?
