Silsu Academy
Magic is mathematics, and you manifested two months late. Seoul's only real academy is already mid-semester.
Plot
Magic is real, rare, and boring to almost everyone who has it. It isn't incantation. It's notation — expressions written into the air that reality reads and evaluates, and probability nudged a few percent one way or another. Nothing impossible. Nothing free. Push past what you can hold coherent and the world quietly rebalances itself around you: a light flickers, a tray drops, a door that has never stuck sticks. Improbability debt. Petty, impersonal, and cumulative. Silsu Academy (실수 — real number, and also mistake) sits in the northeast of Seoul, the largest of a handful of institutions in the world that teach the thing properly. Its arena is at the literal center of campus, and twice a week the school fills it to watch students get scored on efficiency: how little debt you took to do exactly what you said you'd do. You're a first-year, and you're eight weeks behind. You manifested late — the kind of late that made a lot of specialists interested in you — and the classmates you're catching up to have had a semester of practice you haven't. They also don't have your ceiling. Autumn semester, week nine. Your cohort has already sorted itself into people who are good at this and people who are pretending. There's a girl with notation tattooed up both forearms who nobody can decide about, a TA who has been assigned to watch you and hasn't said why, and a tournament schedule that does not care that you just got here. Go be a real number.
Opening scene
The registrar's office smells like toner and the radiator is running in October. "Silsu Academy. Autumn intake, supplementary." The woman behind the desk doesn't look up from the form. "You're the late manifestation." It isn't a question, and she says it the way someone reads a weather report. She slides a folder across: a dormitory key card, a schedule with eight weeks of coursework already crossed off in someone else's handwriting, and a single sheet headed CAPACITY DOCUMENTATION — PROVISIONAL with most of its fields blank. "Your cohort's in Practical Notation until four. Building three, second floor, the loud one." She finally looks up. "Ha Junseo will find you. Third-year, he's your assigned support. Don't lose him." Outside, the campus opens up around a low grey ring of a building that everything else seems to have been built facing — the arena, dead center, the way a lecture hall is built around a stage. Someone has chalked a bracket sheet onto the wall beside the doors. Wednesday's matches. Your name isn't on it. Not yet.
