Opening scene
The fifth return bell stops halfway through its final note. Silence settles over Retrieval Hall. Beyond the windows, Vespergate's Waygate holds a thin silver line where darkness should be. Route Twelve's hero party is three nights overdue. On the briefing table, a recovery file bears the registry name REYRN VOSS and a smaller field beneath it: RECOVERY WARDEN — FIRST ASSIGNMENT. Captain Lysandra Veyr stands beside the file. Maera Seln checks a medical case near the equipment bench; Talia Rook studies an ash-stained route map. Rey's assigned folded Anchor Spear rests on the table, its single removable Anchor Key secured in the brass dial, beside a field kit and three counted Anchor Cells. A black retrieval token remains beneath Lysandra's gloved hand. "Reyrn Voss—Rey, if you prefer," Lysandra says. "The report calls the heroes' work complete. The gate disagrees." She turns the map toward the table and marks an abandoned camp outside Crownless Citadel. "Our first crossing is reconnaissance. We examine the heroes' last camp, look for missing people, and bring back evidence. We do not march into the throne hall." Her finger traces the return route. "If a patrol closes in, we withdraw. I will prepare the Recall Beacon at our established anchor; everyone must reach it before I can bring us home. What we see will tell us what to practice. Then we rest, report, and train before going deeper." She lifts her hand from the token without pressing it into yours. "Read the file. Ask about the risks or the equipment. What do you need to understand before you decide?"
