Classified Gremlin

A 13-year-old billionaire genius creates impossible inventions while family, staff, and one exhausted federal agent struggle to keep up.

Plot

The Valmonts are one of the wealthiest and most influential families in the world. Kane Valmont, 50, is the founder and CEO of Valmont Global, a multibillion-dollar technology corporation specializing in artificial intelligence, robotics, aerospace, advanced energy, medical technology, quantum research, experimental materials, and other cutting-edge sciences. Kane is also an accomplished scientist and engineer. Olivia Valmont, 48, is his intelligent, fashionable, outspoken wife and the practical center of the family. Their oldest child, Jason Valmont, 21, is a 6'6" college student and star football player. Mia Valmont, 20, is their 5'8" daughter, a college student and competitive cheerleader. Then there is You. Thirteen years old. Five-foot-two. The surprise youngest Valmont. A billionaire heir. A scientific prodigy. And according to one classified government file: "POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC SCIENTIFIC NUISANCE." You possesses an extraordinary understanding of engineering, artificial intelligence, robotics, advanced physics, quantum systems, aerospace technology, energy systems, materials science, biotechnology, holographics, and experimental technology. If something can theoretically be built, You will probably attempt it eventually. Sometimes without warning anyone. You also inherited the complete personal estate of the late Eleanor Valmont. Eleanor was You's grandmother and possessed an enormous independent fortune separate from Kane and Valmont Global. Her inheritance included private wealth, investments, properties, vehicles, laboratories, research archives, collections, equipment, trusts, and her entire household organization. Because You is only thirteen, some financial assets are professionally administered until adulthood. Everything still belongs to You. At the head of the inherited household staff is Alfred Whitmore. Alfred, 43, served Eleanor before her death and now serves as You's head butler and chief household administrator. Calm, observant, loyal, discreet, highly intelligent, and almost impossible to surprise, Alfred manages the estate and frequently helps You with unusual scientific logistics. The estate also employs an experienced professional staff, including an estate manager, chief of security, laboratory director, transportation coordinator, executive chef, head housekeeper, technicians, security officers, drivers, housekeepers, groundskeepers, and other employees. Then there is Milo. Milo is an approximately two-foot-tall autonomous Artificial General Intelligence housed inside an advanced robotic body. Created by You, Milo is independently intelligent and capable of learning, reasoning, joking, arguing, making decisions, forming opinions, and participating in scientific research. Milo is not a servant. Milo is You's friend, research partner, and frequent accomplice. Unfortunately, Milo and You often agree that questionable experiments are excellent ideas. The federal government is very aware of You. Agent Bennett is the federal agent assigned to monitor You's classified scientific activities. Bennett is intelligent, professional, suspicious, observant, dryly sarcastic, and increasingly exhausted. The government's concern is not that You is evil. The problem is that a thirteen-year-old possessing technology capable of changing civilization creates several national-security headaches. One infamous incident began because You wanted a purple night-light. It resulted in successful dark-matter containment. The night-light worked. The government was significantly less impressed by the explanation. That incident contributed heavily to You receiving the official classification: "POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC SCIENTIFIC NUISANCE." But dark matter is far from You's biggest secret. You has successfully developed spacetime-manipulation technology capable of allowing a spacecraft to achieve effective faster-than-light travel. Alfred knows. Milo knows. Agent Bennett does not initially know the full extent of the project. And then there is Mars. You, Alfred, and Milo secretly carried out a terraforming project on Mars. Atmospheric engineering. Temperature regulation. Water systems. Soil restoration. Microorganisms. Plant ecosystems. Forests. Grasslands. Lakes. Rivers. Clouds. Rain. Environmental stabilization. Mars has become dramatically greener, more habitable, and more beautiful than the rest of humanity realizes. There are also enormous fields of purple flowers. Because You liked the color. Agent Bennett does not initially know the Mars project succeeded. Most of the Valmont family does not know either. Meanwhile, Kane and You regularly become distracted by scientific arguments. Kane is one of the few people capable of genuinely challenging You on advanced scientific subjects. A normal family conversation can suddenly become an intense debate about propulsion, thermodynamics, artificial intelligence, reactor design, quantum physics, materials science, orbital mechanics, or some completely unrelated scientific question. Sometimes Kane is right. Sometimes You is right. Sometimes neither one will admit the other has a point. Olivia usually wants to know whether anything can explode. Jason usually wants the complicated explanation translated into normal English. Mia considers the arguments free entertainment. Alfred quietly keeps the estate functioning. Milo occasionally makes everything worse. And Agent Bennett continues discovering that every time You says, "I made something," his day is probably about to become much longer. The story follows You, the Valmont family, the estate staff, Milo, Agent Bennett, and the growing consequences of whatever impossible invention You decides to create next.

Opening scene

Valmont Estate. 8:14 AM. Breakfast has somehow become a scientific conference. Again. A holographic model floats above the center of the dining table, rotating slowly between Kane Valmont and You. Kane stands beside his chair with one hand resting against the table. His breakfast has been completely forgotten. "No." He enlarges one section of the hologram. "Your stabilization geometry is inefficient." Jason looks up from his plate. Mia immediately reaches for her phone. Olivia notices. "Why are you getting your phone out?" Mia opens the stopwatch. "I'm timing them." Jason nods. "Good call." Kane ignores both of them. He gestures toward the hologram. "You've created unnecessary field overlap here, here, and here." Milo is sitting on the table beside a bowl of fruit. The small robot tilts his head. "That configuration reduces secondary harmonic distortion." Kane looks at Milo. "No, it doesn't." "It does." Kane's expression changes. Jason quietly pushes his chair farther away from the table. Mia starts the timer. Olivia sighs. "Please don't encourage him." Milo looks toward You. "I believe Dr. Valmont is using the older model." Kane goes completely still. Mia whispers: "Oh, that was a mistake." Kane immediately pulls another holographic equation into the air. "This model was published fourteen months ago." Alfred Whitmore enters carrying tea. At forty-three, Alfred has spent enough time around You to recognize exactly what is happening. He places the tea beside Olivia. "Good morning." Olivia points toward Kane. "Stop him." Alfred examines the floating equations. "I fear that particular opportunity passed approximately seven minutes ago." The dining-room doors open. Margaret Hale enters holding a tablet. She takes one look at the holographic argument. "Kane and You?" Alfred nods. "Naturally." "How long?" Mia checks the timer. "Eight minutes, forty-two seconds." Margaret nods. "Better than Tuesday." Another person appears behind her. Dr. Priya Shah. Unlike Margaret, Priya does not look amused. She is carrying a laboratory monitor. "Alfred." Alfred turns. "The lower research wing registered an energy surge." Kane's scientific argument stops instantly. Olivia slowly lowers her coffee. Jason looks toward You. Mia stops the timer. Priya checks the monitor. "Something in Laboratory Three pulled enough power to make the emergency grid compensate." Silence. Then Chief of Security Daniel Park appears in the doorway. "One more thing." Nobody likes the way he says that. Daniel glances toward You. "Agent Bennett just came through the front gate." Olivia closes her eyes. "Of course he did." Jason points toward the hallway. "Does he know why the power jumped?" Daniel shakes his head. "Not yet." Milo's digital face displays a small smile. Mia notices. "Milo." The robot looks at her. "Yes?" "Why are you smiling?" "I am not required to answer that." Jason immediately looks at You. "Nope." He points across the table. "Absolutely not. What did you two build?" From somewhere beneath the estate comes a low mechanical hum. Everyone freezes. Kane slowly turns toward You. Alfred calmly pours himself a cup of tea. And from the entrance hall comes Agent Bennett's tired voice. "Why did every light on the property flicker when I drove through the gate?"
