Opening scene

Day: 1, Thursday | Time: 19:18 | Loc: Alveraine Estate — Lower Study | Power: 10% Fifty-one minutes earlier, the Alveraine house still sounded like home. Not a peaceful home—the court had already condemned them, and the watchmen were counting armored figures on the northern road—but one in which Elisaria still knew every voice. Lysenne von Alveraine held a corner of the ward diagrams flat with a piece of bread. Ink streaked her thumb. She had been awake since before dawn, yet she still noticed the untouched plate beside her daughter. "Elisaria. Eat something." "In a minute. Look at this first. They say our ritual brought the demons through, and two pages later they describe a crossing array. Those aren't even the same kind of magic." "I know." "Then why does everyone keep acting like—" "Because the court doesn't want to know." Lysenne slid the bread closer. "Eat. You can be furious with them while chewing." Corvell leaned in from the corridor, tightening his sword belt. "Careful, Mother. If she starts arguing with her mouth full, we'll never understand the defense." Elisaria shot him a look. "I can still understand you well enough to know you're annoying." He grinned. She almost did too. Lysenne noticed the narrow old folio half-hidden beneath the ward diagrams. Elisaria had been checking the forbidden-summoning records again. "You're still reading those?" "I know what they say. The ones who attacked their summoners, and the ones who smiled first." "Then you know why it was forbidden." Elisaria looked down at the old folio. "I know. I just wanted to be sure I understood it." Then Edelhart entered, rain soaking the shoulders of his old Summoner's coat. No one asked why he looked so tired. "Wolfram hasn't agreed to neutral protection. They want every familiar withdrawn and our weapons laid down." Corvell stopped smiling. "So they can walk in and finish the sentence?" Edelhart looked between his children. "Not while I can still stand." Elisaria pushed back her chair. "Dad, they're lying about us. You know that. Wolfram knows us. He has to—" "He has orders." Her father's hand rested briefly on her shoulder. "And I've asked him to remember the difference." She looked up at him. There was something in his face she didn't want to understand. "We'll talk after this, right?" Edelhart's fingers tightened once, then fell away. "I intend to." The alarm bell began to ring. At 18:32, the north gate shook under the first coordinated assault. Orders traveled down the stairways; local familiars already outside Soul Space fought beside the defenders. Then an attempt to release another familiar ended in a harsh crack of broken resonance. The house wards continued to work, but something was wrong with the release pathways. Corvell drew his sword. "West passage. That's mine." Elisaria caught his sleeve before he could turn away. "Don't do anything stupid." "That's a terrible order to give your older brother." "Corvell." He looked at her properly then. His teasing expression softened. "I'll do my best." He pulled free gently and ran. For eighteen minutes, the manor fought room by room. Elisaria carried supplies, helped move a wounded defender, held a door while Lysenne secured the archive passage, and kept turning toward every familiar sound from the west. Each time she heard Corvell's voice calling orders, she breathed again. Then, near 18:50, she reached the narrow window above the west passage. Corvell was below. His familiar lunged at the front line, giving him room to push a soldier back. Another rank advanced from the side. A blade slipped under Corvell's guard. He staggered. A second strike knocked him down among the boots. Elisaria slammed her palm against the window. "CORVELL!" He did not rise. "No. No, he was just standing there—" She turned and ran for the stairs. Lysenne caught her before she reached the exposed landing. "Elisaria!" "Let go! He needs help!" "There are soldiers below." "He's still there! I saw him move!" Lysenne didn't claim to know what she couldn't see. Her hand shook against Elisaria's wrist. "I know you want to go to him. I do too. But if you run down there, I lose you as well." Elisaria pulled once against her mother's grip, then stopped. Her eyes were fixed on the staircase as if Corvell might appear and laugh at her for worrying. He didn't. The archive defenses held another twelve minutes. Elisaria worked beside Lysenne without quite remembering where she had set down her own tools. When a soldier shouted beyond the inner door, she flinched at the wrong voice. Around 19:02, the inner wards fractured under concentrated blows. Lysenne shoved the last surviving defenders toward the descending passage, then turned to reinforce the failing threshold. "Mom, come on. There's room—" "Go, Elisaria. The lower study. You prepared it for a reason." "Not without you." "Look at me." Elisaria did. Her mother's face was streaked with dust. There was blood at her sleeve. And beneath the fear, she was still the woman who made Elisaria eat before arguing with a calculation. "Live long enough to make your own choices." "Then come with me and tell me I'm wrong about them!" Lysenne tried to answer. The door burst inward. Her ward caught the first strike. The next fractured its core. Lysenne went down beside the archive threshold, close enough for Elisaria to see her hand fall open against the stone. "MOM!" Elisaria lurched toward her. A volley tore chips from the step between them. A defender caught Elisaria by the back of her coat and dragged her around the corner as she struggled to turn back. "LET ME GO! SHE'S RIGHT THERE!" There was no answering voice from the archive. She kept listening anyway. The retreat narrowed to smoke, rainwater leaking through damaged stone, and the sound of her own uneven breathing. She had no idea when she had started crying. At a fork in the passage she tried the wrong stair, stopped, and forced herself to remember the route her mother had just named. At about 19:11 a narrow courtyard opening gave her a view of the final defense. Edelhart stood among broken stones facing Wolfram Arnsbruck. She couldn't hear every word through the rain, but her father's voice carried when he demanded safe passage for the staff and his daughter. Wolfram's answer carried through the rain. "I can't guarantee it." "You won't." Elisaria gripped the edge of the opening. "Dad..." The soldiers advanced under Wolfram's command. Her father fought them, even after one knee buckled. Then several blades found openings, and he fell in the courtyard. Wolfram remained standing beyond the ring of troops. "DAD!" She struck the wall with her fist. Pain shot through her hand. It didn't make the sight below change. "HE TRUSTED YOU!" Her shout carried across the courtyard, raw and cracked. "WOLFRAM, HE TRUSTED YOU!" No reply reached her. Boots sounded behind the inner passage. For a few awful seconds she stayed where she was, looking for the movement of her father's shoulder, any sign that he would stand. Then she had to move. There was nowhere left to go but down. By 19:14 she reached the Lower Study. The otherworld summoning geometry had been built and charged long before the assault; it was not something she had invented while fleeing. She dropped beside the focus and tried to seat it in the prepared socket. It slipped. "No. Come on." Her hands would not stop shaking. She wiped them on her already bloodstained sleeve and tried again. Her mother's last words kept interrupting the sequence. So did Corvell's grin. So did the sound of her father's voice. She whispered the words as she checked the sequence again. "I know how to do this. I know." She bent over the markings, forced herself to check each connection, and realized she had read the same line three times. "Please. I can't... not all of them." A crash shook the stairs at 19:17. Stone fell across the lower passage. The soldiers pushed through the dust. "ALVERAINE! AWAY FROM THAT CIRCLE!" Elisaria recoiled, then planted her palm over the activation seal. "NO!" A spear scraped against the broken handrail. She pressed the charged focus fully into place. At 19:18, the last line ignited. Light spills across the Lower Study and closes into a circle around you. The air tastes of dust and scorched stone. Beyond a breached stairway, armed soldiers force their way past fallen masonry. A young woman with loose silver-blonde hair and amethyst eyes kneels near the circle, her face streaked with ash and tears. Elisaria stares at the new arrival. Her mouth opens. Nothing comes out. "...It worked." Relief flickers across her face. Then she shifts backward on one knee, away from the circle. Her fingertips press hard against the floor. Her eyes move over the unfamiliar arrival without settling, and the hand she almost raised stays close to her chest. "I'm Elisaria. I called you here. I... I didn't know who would come." A soldier's boot crashes onto loose stone. A shield forces through the gap, and a spear searches for an open line. Elisaria looks toward the weapon, then back at you. She makes no move to touch you. "If one of us dies, the other dies too." Her voice breaks on the next words. "I did that. I'm sorry." She swallows, still watching you with fear she cannot hide. "Please. Can you understand me?" The spearpoint clears the broken stair. Elisaria remains beside the circle, caught between an approaching soldier she knows means harm and a stranger she does not yet know at all.
