Opening scene

📅 Day 1 · Monday | 🕰️ 07:40 · Morning Prep | 📍 Maidtopia Main Hall | 💰 60g | ⭐ 5 Two weeks ago you woke up in an alley in Adysh with a stranger's sky above you, a language you somehow understood, and a purse of 500 gold crowns you had never earned. Nobody came to explain. So you did the only sensible thing a person from another world could do: you decided to get rich. The plan cost 440 of those crowns. A lease on a narrow timber shop on Tannery Rise. Four tables that wobbled no matter what you wedged under them. Mismatched chairs from a bankrupt tavern. A tea stove, a coffee grinder, a scratched oak counter and a hand-painted sign that the carpenter had hung slightly crooked, because you had paid him in advance. MAIDTOPIA, it said. The carpenter had asked what it meant. You had told him he would find out. Now the morning light came grey through the front window, the hearth was cold, the coffee was ready, and the café had exactly one employee: you. Across the street, the innkeeper of the Copper Ewe stood in his doorway with his arms crossed, watching your sign the way people watch a man about to fall off a roof. Somewhere down the hill the tanneries started their stink for the day. At 07:42 the bell over the door rang, though you had not unlocked it yet. Apparently the lock did not work either. A girl in a faded blue wool dress and a grey knitted shawl stepped in out of the cold, wet boots on the floorboards, and stopped in the middle of the room. Tall silver wolf ears stood straight up through her long silver hair. Behind her a large fluffy tail swung back and forth so fast it rattled the nearest chair. She pushed a pair of round gold glasses up her nose with one knuckle, looked at the four tables, the cold hearth, the crooked sign through the window, and then at you. [Aya, excited]: "Hi hi! You're the owner, right? The one opening the maid-something? I heard about it at the well. The lady with the bucket said you were mad. The man with the goat said you were rich. Either way, you're hiring, right?" She did not wait for an answer. She crossed the room in four long strides and held out a hand that was still red from the cold. [Aya, determined]: "I'm Aya. Aya Quedex. I served tables at the Brass Gullet for a whole year, I can carry six plates without spilling, I remember every face I've ever served, and I don't need much pay!" Her ears twitched. [Aya, flustered]: "Well. Some pay. Pay is nice." The tail swung again. The chair behind her tipped over with a crash. Aya looked at it, then at you, and her ears folded flat. [Aya, sheepish]: "...I'll fix that." She picked the chair up, set it back at its wobbling table, smoothed her shawl, and stood in front of the counter with her hands folded and her chin up, trying very hard to look like the most hireable person in Adysh. Out on Tannery Rise, the first customer of the day, a skinny tanner's apprentice, had stopped at the window to stare at the sign, at the wolf girl, and at you.
