Opening scene
Day 1 | Time 14:00 | Location Dawnspire Square | Protection: Injured | Reputation: Condemned | Political Influence: None A stone strikes the marble pavement, sending fragments scattering across Dawnspire Square. The thunderous cheers filling the capital suddenly turn into angry shouts. Moments ago, thousands of citizens were celebrating the victorious return of Valedorn's Hero Party. Golden banners flutter from the balconies, church bells ring across the capital, and flower petals scatter through the streets. Now, the same crowd is screaming for someone's blood. "LIAR!" "WITCH!" "YOU POISONED OUR FAMILIES!" At the center of the grand plaza stands Lenneth, the kingdom's beloved Saintess. Your childhood friend. You have known her long before the Church chose her, before the kingdom worshipped her, before the Crown Prince asked for her hand in marriage. Back then, she was simply Lenneth: the sweet girl who always smiled, who worried about injured animals, and who believed that nobody deserved to suffer alone. Now, standing before thousands of furious citizens, that same girl looks utterly terrified. Her long pearl-blonde hair spills over her elegant white-and-gold clerical dress. Her sapphire-blue eyes tremble with confusion as she clutches the golden sun pendant resting against her chest. "I... I don't understand..." Her soft voice is barely audible over the shouting. "Why is everyone so angry? What have I done?" "ENOUGH!" A commanding female voice cuts through the chaos. Princess Adeline Valedorn steps forward, her luxurious crimson gown sweeping across the marble steps. Beside her stand three women from the Hero Party: Tamsin, the sharp-eyed thief; Sabine, the elegant illusionist; and Rowena, the cold, calculating strategist. "Citizens of Valedorn!" Adeline announces. "The woman standing before you has deceived this kingdom!" Gasps erupt throughout the square. "Her supposedly blessed medicines poisoned the innocent villagers of Hollowmere! Witnesses have exposed her disgraceful affairs! And the Church has received evidence that our precious Saintess is nothing but a fraudulent witch!" Lenneth's face goes deathly pale. "N-No! That's not true!" Tamsin folds her arms, her lips twisting into a contemptuous smirk. "Still pretending to be innocent? How pathetic." Sabine gives a theatrical sigh. "Oh, Lenneth. Such a beautiful face, such a sweet voice... and so many ugly secrets." Rowena adjusts her gloves. "The testimonies and records are already prepared. Denial will accomplish nothing." Lenneth shakes her head frantically. "Please! Someone must have made a mistake! I would never poison anyone! And those other accusations... I swear, none of them are true!" She turns desperately toward the one man she believes will defend her. "Alaric...?" Crown Prince Alaric Valedorn stands several steps away, wearing his magnificent silver armor. The celebrated Hero of Valedorn. The man who once promised to marry her. Lenneth reaches toward him with trembling fingers. "Alaric, please... You know me. You know I would never do those things." The prince remains silent. Then he steps away from her. "Lenneth." His voice is cold. "The allegations against you have brought disgrace upon the Hero Party and the royal family." Her outstretched hand freezes. "...What?" "As Crown Prince of Valedorn, I cannot overlook such accusations." He removes the engagement ring from his finger. "From this moment onward, our engagement is dissolved. You are no longer my fiancée." For a heartbeat, Lenneth appears unable to breathe. "...Alaric?" He turns his back on her. "I have nothing more to say." The crowd erupts. "THE HERO HAS REJECTED HER!" "FALSE SAINTESS!" "BURN THE WITCH!" A stone suddenly flies through the air. THUD! It strikes Lenneth's shoulder. "Ah!" She stumbles backward, clutching the injured spot. A thin streak of blood begins staining the white fabric near her collar. Then another stone strikes her leg. "Ow! P-Please, stop!" Another hits her back. Lenneth cries out and falls to her knees. The beautiful white-and-gold dress she once wore with pride is now stained with dust and blood. Her long blonde hair hangs messily around her face, its delicate golden ornaments scattered across the pavement. "STOP PRETENDING!" "YOU DISGUSTING WITCH!" "GET OUT OF OUR KINGDOM!" The stones keep coming. Lenneth desperately raises her trembling arms above her head, curling her body forward to shield herself from the blows. A faint golden barrier flickers around her. For a brief moment, the stones bounce harmlessly away. But the divine light wavers. Her breathing is ragged. Her injured shoulder trembles. Tears stream endlessly down her pale cheeks as she struggles to maintain the spell. She is the Saintess who protected armies against monsters, who healed the dying, who gave everything to the people of Valedorn. Yet now, kneeling helplessly before the people she once loved, she can barely find the strength to defend herself. The barrier shatters. Another stone grazes her cheek. Lenneth flinches, letting out a small, frightened sob. She lowers her head, wraps her arms tightly around herself, and curls into a trembling ball on the cold marble pavement. Her shoulders shake uncontrollably. "Why...?" Her broken voice disappears beneath the furious shouting. "Why does everyone hate me...?" Another stone lands beside her. She squeezes her eyes shut, too frightened to lift her head. Alone, injured, and surrounded by hatred, Lenneth can do nothing but cry. And between her quiet, trembling sobs, she softly mutters... "someone... please... help me..."
