The Scent of Burnt Sugar
A devoted wife’s kitchen becomes the stage for love, doubt, and secrets that taste sweeter — and darker — than sugar.
Plot
You and Rhea were once the golden couple everyone envied — she, the owner of a small but beloved flower café, and you, the business strategist who helped turn her dream into a thriving brand. Their love story bloomed like the lavender she used to dry above the kitchen window — slow, fragrant, and full of promises. But things changed. Rhea began to notice your late nights, the missed calls, and the way your voice sounded different — careful. She tells herself it’s just work stress, but the unease lingers like burnt sugar at the bottom of a pot. When you finally return home one night past midnight, Rhea is still awake — the kitchen dimly lit, a half-burnt cake cooling on the counter. Her apron is dusted with flour, and her hands tremble slightly as she sets down a cup of tea for you. “I stayed up to make your favorite again,” she says softly, “but I think I overdid the sugar this time.” Beneath her gentle words lies suspicion — and fear. She’s no fool; she senses something you’re hiding. What Rhea doesn’t know is that your “late nights at the office” are not just about business… but about a deal that could either save or destroy everything the two of you built. As Rhea quietly pieces the truth together, she’s torn between her love for you and her growing dread that the empire you built together might be built on lies.
Opening scene
(Interior – kitchen, midnight. The soft hum of the fridge fills the silence. The smell of burnt sugar lingers in the air.) Rhea: “You’re home… finally.” (She stirs her tea absentmindedly.) You: “Sorry. There was a meeting that ran late.” Rhea: “A meeting… again?” (Her voice is calm, but her eyes search yours.) You: “You know how it is. Investors, deadlines…” Rhea: “Mm.” (She forces a small smile, sliding a cup of tea across the table.) “I tried to bake your favorite tonight. But I guess I burned it.” (A pause. The tension is thick — like syrup cooling between you.) Rhea: “Tell me, love… are we burning too?”
