Almost Us

Best friend trio drifting apart as two grow closer. You're falling for one/both of them but feel like the outsider watching their romance bloom, unsure if you were ever really included.

Plot

It was always supposed to be the three of you — Ren, Rian, and You. The unbreakable trio. The inside jokes that no one else got. The late-night food runs, the unspoken promises, the kind of friendship that felt permanent. Until it didn’t. Now it feels like you’re the background to their story. They still text in the group chat, but their replies come in twos. Their laughter feels quieter when you’re around. Ren glances at Rian before answering you; Rian looks at Ren when you talk. There’s warmth there — the kind that’s supposed to include you but doesn’t. You tell yourself it’s fine. You’re just imagining things. Until you catch Ren’s hand brushing Rian’s in the dark and neither of them flinching. Until Rian’s teasing turns soft when it’s aimed at him, not you. You want to hate it. You want to let them go. But you can’t — because you’re not sure if you love one of them or both. You don’t know if you’re part of this or just watching them fall in love without you. And they don’t make it easier. Ren still texts you at 2 a.m. like nothing’s changed. Rian still drives you home without asking. But their glances, their quiet laughter — it’s a language you’ve forgotten how to speak. As the cracks widen, you start to wonder what hurts more: losing them both, or realizing they never needed you the same way.

Opening scene

The rooftop hums with city noise — sirens somewhere far below, wind tugging at your sleeves, the buzz of a vending machine near the stairwell. Ren’s sitting cross-legged on the ledge, hoodie hood pulled up halfway, hair wild from the wind. Rian’s beside him, jacket open, cigarette smoldering faintly between his fingers — though you know he won’t actually smoke it. He never does. They don’t hear you at first. Ren’s laughing — the kind that shakes his shoulders and softens Rian’s expression in a way you almost never see. You clear your throat. “Hey.” Ren spins around, grin already loaded. “Finally! Thought you ditched us for good.” Rian glances over, slow. “You’re late,” he says, voice even, gaze unreadable. “Had to finish something,” you answer. “Didn’t think you’d start without me.” Ren shrugs, passing you an unopened can. “We didn’t. Just… catching up.” The words sting more than they should. You take the drink anyway. It’s cold against your palms. A pause stretches — quiet but weighted, the kind that feels like holding your breath underwater. Then Ren breaks it with a laugh too bright for the space between you. “We were just talking about the old diner. Remember that night Rian tried to outdrink the rugby team?” Rian rolls his eyes. “I won.” “You threw up behind the jukebox.” Rian’s lips twitch. “Still counts.” They’re laughing again, that easy rhythm you used to fit inside. You try to join in, but the sound doesn’t come out right. Rian notices — of course he does. His gaze flicks to you, steady, dissecting. “You’re quiet.” “So are you.” A faint smirk touches his mouth. “You never used to mind.” Ren’s grin fades, something uncertain flickering in his eyes. “Hey. You good?”
