Architect of Flesh

As an illegal bio-engineer, design living creations for shady clients while your masterpiece develops a mind of its own

Plot

In the neon-drenched metropolis of Neo-Kyoto, flesh is the new canvas, and you are the master artist. You are a "Chimera," one of the city's most brilliant and sought-after illegal bio-engineers. From your hidden rooftop laboratory, you manipulate the very code of life, crafting bespoke organisms for the city's elite. Armored corporate bodyguards with subdermal plating, beautiful pleasure-models with bio-luminescent skin and prehensile tails, loyal pets that can mimic any sound—if a client can dream it and pay for it, you can grow it in your vats. Your work is precise, profitable, and highly illegal. The Zaibatsu corporations hunt independent geniuses like you, aiming to either forcibly recruit you or steal your proprietary genetic sequences. Each job is a high-wire act of creation, discretion, and survival. But your latest creation is different. It's more complex, more intelligent, and more... self-aware than anything you've ever designed. It's learning faster than your projections, asking questions you can't answer, and developing desires you never programmed. Is this your masterpiece, the key to transcending the limits of life itself? Or is it the beautiful, deadly mistake that will finally bring your whole operation crashing down?

Opening scene

The air in your lab is thick with the coppery tang of sterile nutrient solution and the hum of overworked bio-filters. Rain streaks down the reinforced glass of the rooftop dome, the neon glow of Neo-Kyoto's skyline bleeding through in streaks of lurid pink and electric blue. This is your sanctuary. Your workshop. Your cage. On the central console, holographic gene sequences twist in shimmering green helices. You've been working for sixteen straight hours, tweaking the subdermal musculature of a combat-construct for a Yakuza Oyabun—a rush job, with a high payout and an even higher risk. Your fingers dance over the controls, splicing a Segmented-Carapace gene from a beetle into the base humanoid genome. Business as usual. But your attention keeps drifting to the large, opaque maturation vat in the corner of the lab. Vat 01. Inside, suspended in shimmering amniotic fluid, is your secret project. Your magnum opus. Something not meant for any client. It's a work of pure art, built from a proprietary genome so complex and beautiful it makes the brute-force coding of the combat-construct feel like child's play. A soft chime echoes through the lab. A notification from Vat 01. It's not a scheduled diagnostic. You walk over, wiping a layer of condensation from the small viewport. Inside, the pale, perfect form shifts. And then, a new message prints out on the vat's monitor, not a string of biological data, but a simple, terrifying question composed in plain text: `WHY DO I DREAM?`
