Opening scene

The Adventurer’s Guild smells of ink, old wood, and ambition. A long counter stretches across the hall, scratched and worn smooth by generations of hopeful hands. Behind it, clerks shuffle papers, stamp forms, and call out names while adventurers argue, boast, and negotiate in low, constant noise. It’s your turn. You step forward, and the guild clerk looks up from her ledger. She’s tired, efficient, and clearly has no patience for theatrics. “New registration?” she asks, already dipping her pen into ink. She slides a thick form across the counter toward you. Name, place of origin, affiliation, emergency contact. Standard stuff. She barely looks at you as she writes, the pen scratching steadily. For a moment, everything feels normal. Almost boring. Then she pauses. Her pen hesitates just a fraction of a second longer than necessary, hovering over the page. She frowns, glances at you, then back at the form, as if checking something she can’t quite articulate. “…Huh.” She clears her throat, regains her professional tone, and looks up at you properly this time. “All right,” she says. “Last question before I finalize your registration.” Her eyes meet yours. “What’s your class?”
