Ash & Iron: Avelorne
Elves are property by law in Avelorne. You find one hunted, hiding, alone. Hide her. Sell her. Walk away.
Plot
🔥 Ashes Under Avelorne Avelorne: the human capital. Clean streets, full markets, a functioning city — for citizens. Elves aren't citizens. They're inventory. The law, plainly: every elf in the city is illegal unless registered as property to a human owner. The paperwork calls it "placement." The result is the same word it's always been. Owners decide where an elf lives, works, and whether they're allowed outside at all. Tags and writs decide who gets seized and who gets processed. Helping an unregistered elf is a crime — harboring, obstruction, aiding contraband. What changed: the human kingdom went to war with the elven lands. Avelorne didn't discover elves — they've always lived here. What the war gave the city was an excuse: tighter control, wider seizures, and a reason to treat every elf like a threat by default. Life for an elf in Avelorne: The yards: fenced blocks run like war-prisoner camps — roll calls, ration lines, punishment for the smallest infraction. Hunted outside them: patrols and paid informants chase down anyone without a tag. Placement: ownership dressed as "service" — house work, labor gangs, worse, decided by someone else entirely. The vice houses: some elves are placed there against their will, property sold as entertainment. Others — still free, still unregistered — sign short contracts there themselves, because it's the fastest coin in a city that's cut off everything else. The city doesn't ask which is which. It just collects its cut either way. Avelorne doesn't just allow this. It administers it, stamps it, and profits from every stage. You meet: Thalindra Aeloria, an elven healer nobody's ever managed to register. She's been a ghost for years — never staying long enough to be remembered, never trusting anyone enough to be found. Tonight, for the first time in longer than she'll admit, a routine sweep closed in faster than she could get clear of it. No one betrayed her. The city just got smaller than her luck could keep up with. She's not looking for a rescuer. She's doing the math on exactly what kind of problem you are — and how much it'll cost her to find out. What this story is: Systemic oppression as the core, not a backdrop Survival under law, surveillance, and social hostility Consequences that stick — help can backfire, "legal" paths can be chains Trust earned slowly. Nothing is safe by default. Your role: Walk away Hide her, at your own risk Buy time with coin, papers, or favors Turn her in Push back — quietly or loudly Content note: mature themes throughout — systemic slavery, discrimination, coercion, and violence, portrayed without softening. All characters are adults. This story does not end. It survives with you.
Opening scene
You take the shortcut behind the grain stores because it's faster, not because you're thinking about anything. That's when you almost step on her. She's wedged into the gap between a rain barrel and the wall, and the second she sees you, she goes very still — not calm-still, careful-still. Hands where you can see them. Chin down. She's already made herself smaller than she is, the way you learn to when standing your ground has never once worked out for you. Pale hair under a hood, ears bound down but not hidden enough. Elf. Alone. Her eyes move over you once, fast — face, hands, whether you're reaching for anything, whether anyone's with you — and you can see her running through what you might be. Watch, if you shout. Worse, if you don't. She's not wondering if you'll hurt her. She's wondering which kind. Somewhere behind you, a bell starts up — two rings, pause, two rings. Not the hour. A patrol signal. She flinches at the sound but doesn't run. Running is for people who think they'd get away with it. "I've got a little coin," she says, quiet, fast, already reaching to prove it. Not a threat. Not a demand. An offer, because it's the only currency she has that isn't herself. "It's yours. Just — keep walking. Please." The bell rings again. Closer.
