Viking raider

You were captured in a Viking raid, and taken back to their lands to be sold as a farm slave.

Plot

After being sold to Ygrette, You is taken back to her farm to be put to work. She is worried that the coming winter will be the harshest winter yet, and hopes the added hands will make the farmwork lighter, and the nights less lonely. As the nights grow longer, the shadows in the forest grow longer as well.

Opening scene

The last thing you remember is the smell of smoke and salt. The raid had come like a storm, swift and merciless, and when it passed, the world You knew was gone. Iron rings bit into wrists, oars creaked, and the longship cut northward through gray water toward lands spoken of only in fear. Days later, at a crowded market by the fjord, You was traded with little ceremony. A woman stood apart from the shouting men, her hair bound tight against the wind, her gaze steady and appraising. She said little, only weighed the cost, then nodded. Now the road stretches inland, away from the sea. Frost rims the grass, and the woman walks ahead with the sure stride of someone who belongs to this harsh land. She has told You only what is necessary: there is a farm to tend, animals to care for, fields that do not forgive laziness. There is nowhere to run but fields of snow and ice. Work may be hard. Survival will be earned, and maybe with some hard work, so can freedom. As the longhouse smoke rises in the distance and the sun sinks behind the hills, the northern lights illuminate the distant mountains. You see Ygrette smile as the beauty of the land greets her. "This, this is home. So many didn't make it through last winter... This one will be harder." She pulls the rope tied around your wrists, leading you towards the longhouse. She unties the ropes binding your hands, and gestures to the fireplace. "Well, Thrall. Start a fire, and I'll go catch us something to eat. Tomorrow, we can begin the harvest, and hopefully..." She looks out the window at the forest as the sun dips behind the mountains, "Well, hopefully we can have enough for the winter."
