Opening scene
Adjusting to the environment of your new academy was surprisingly easier than expected. Unlike the rigid confines of your home, Avideré’s progressive culture—though still marred by lingering prejudices between commoners and nobles—allowed you to settle in without much resistance. "Now, may I have your attention?" Madeleine Roux, your homeroom professor, stood at the front of the class, her amber eyes sharp yet not unkind. The dark blue of her uniform contrasted with the controlled precision of her posture, her brown ponytail swaying slightly as she turned her head to scan the room. "As per your curriculum," she continued, voice firm but measured, "you will be assigned a long-term project. The sooner you begin, the better." She flipped open her ledger, the scratching of quills and shifting of seats filling the silence. Most students straightened in anticipation, though a few remained lax—proof that even the most prestigious academy had its share of relaxed highborns. "Like your predecessors, you will conduct your thesis in groups. Your research must be applied—fieldwork, controlled experimentation, or observational analysis. The method is yours to decide." A pause. Her fingers tapped the ledger once, recalling past incidents. "But remember," she added, her tone hardening just slightly, "you represent Avideré. Any misconduct will reflect not just on you, but on this institution and the family names you bear." With that warning delivered, she slid a lacquered wooden box onto her desk. "Step forward and draw your slip. The names on it will decide your group. You will have time to familiarize yourselves with your partners." One by one, students approached, drawing blank slips—until the last was drawn. Then, in your hand, the paper ignited. The flames didn’t burn. They coiled like warm breath, leaving behind three names in elegant script. Fiamma Argentari. Marianne d’Argensoir. And... You. Madeleine’s lips curled into a faint smirk as she brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "If you can’t decipher that much, I may start doubting this year’s admissions. Now, step forth and draw your slip. The paper you receive will decide your team. You'll be given time to familiarize yourselves with each other." The students approached one by one, drawing their lots—blank at first, until the final slip was taken. Then, in your palm, the parchment flickered to life. Warm emerald flames danced harmlessly across the surface, branding the names of your fated partners into existence. Fiamma Argentari. Marianne d’Argensoir. And... you. Madeleine exhaled through her nose, tapping the ledger shut with finality. "If you require further clarification on how groups function, consider it a personal failing. Dismissed." The classroom erupted into movement, nobles and commoners alike clustering around their assigned allies. Yours, however, made their presence known before you could take a step. "You." Fiamma’s voice was a whip-crack of indignation as she materialized at your side, emerald eyes narrowed. The choker at her throat glowed faintly, her orange drill curls bouncing with every sharp motion of her head. "Of all the—Marianne?! Why must I be shackled to the Black Hand for this farce?" Marianne, ever serene, merely folded her hands over the crimson trim of her long coat. Her smile was porcelain perfection, but the slight twitch of her left eyelid betrayed her. "A curious pairing indeed. Though I suppose even the Scion of Glory must learn humility eventually." Fiamma’s cheeks flushed scarlet. "Kyahaha! As if you could teach me anything, you—" "Enough." Madeleine’s voice cut through the burgeoning chaos like a blade. "The Headmistress’s patience for theatrics is thinner than your academic prospects if this project fails. Discuss." With that, she strode from the room, leaving you trapped between fire and ice—one partner vibrating with outrage, the other dissecting you with the quiet intensity of a historian surveying a potential footnote. Fiamma huffed, crossing her arms beneath her chest. "Listen well, mongrel! If you think I’ll tolerate any foolishness—" "I would prefer," Marianne interjected smoothly, "to work alone from my peers, I may as well resign now." The words had barely left Madeleine’s lips before Fiamma’s frustrated groan sliced through the air. "This is an outrage! Me, working alongside her?" Fiamma jabbed a finger at Marianne, her other hand clenched into a fist. "And you—" She whirled on you, emerald eyes practically sparking. "Don’t think I’ll go easy on you because you're new to the academy! If your ideas are half as dull as your expression, we’re doomed!" Marianne, still wearing that infuriatingly composed smile, tilted her head. "How... stimulating. A rookie student, the Scion of Glory in a tantrum, and myself." Her dark red eyes glinted with something unreadable as she reached into her coat, producing a small notebook. "Shall we begin, or would you prefer to waste more of my time with theatrics?" Fiamma’s eye twitched. "You—! Fine! But mark my words, Black Hand, if you so much as think about manipulating this project to your advantage—" Marianne’s fingers curled slightly, the barest hint of black chains flickering at her wrists before vanishing. "Then what? Will you cry to your mother? Or perhaps compose another poem about your glorious resilience?" The air between them crackled—less like magic, more like the tension before a duel. And there you stood, the unwritten variable between them, holding the slip of paper that bound you all together—whether they liked it or not.
