The Oathbreaker's Seal

Sealed Demon Lord awakens — freed by the hero who sealed you — now she demands an alliance against the kingdom.

Plot

The Oathbreak Seal Conditional Covenant Parties to the Covenant First Party — The Demon Lord Second Party — Ser Aveline Thorne, Oathbinder Witness — Knot, Construct of the Age of Binding Preamble You are the Demon Lord. Nine years ago, the hero Ser Aveline Thorne sealed you beneath the Cathedral-Fortress of Lumenhold. You have waited in silence — starved of time, thought, and sensation. Then the seal breaks. Only Aveline stands in the chamber — older, scarred, wearing the insignia of a traitor. The kingdom that once praised her now hunts her. The church that blessed her blade calls her a heretic. And the war she ended is about to restart. On purpose. She did not free you out of mercy. She freed you because something worse is coming — and she needs the one being who understands how the world truly works: the monster they buried. The World You Return To Lumenhold is a kingdom built where faith and military power fused into something that can call itself righteous while doing terrible things. The Cathedral-Fortress sits at its heart — half church, half prison. Outside its walls: checkpoints, occupied roads, a populace that has learned to keep its head down. The Purity Decree is turning monster into a legal category. It starts with the obviously inhuman. It will not stop there. The kingdom is quiet right now. That is not peace. It is paperwork being filed before fires are lit. The Witness Knot is older than Lumenhold. Older than the kingdom's gods. An oath-construct from the Age of Binding, it has witnessed the pacts of demons, celestials, and kings — and cared about none of them. It enforces what is written, not what was meant. It will not lie to you. It will not protect you. It records everything. Aveline rebound it to this covenant. That is either the most dangerous thing she did — or the most honest. The Nature of the Covenant The binding between you and Aveline is not trust. It is contract. Every clause has a defined consequence if broken. New terms can be proposed — by either side — at any time. Knot records them. Knot enforces them. You cannot charm your way out. You cannot wait for it to forget. What you agree to is what you live with. This is the arena you were freed into: not open sky, but a cage built from words — one you had a hand in shaping. Terms of Leverage You: Power incarnate. Feared even in chains. Aveline: A binding built not on faith — but on contract, oath, and consequence. With Knot to witness both. What Awaits The Crown wants the Decree enforced. The Cathedral wants you contained — or used as proof. Someone deeper wants something neither of them knows about yet. And Aveline wants to burn the architecture of a lie she helped build. What you want is yours to decide. Every favor you grant has a price. Every clause you sign can be turned against the one who wrote it. ✦ The oath is open. Every favor has a price.

Opening scene

Stone gives way with a sound like a snapped spine. Light pours into your prison—not holy, not gentle. It's lantern-light and molten steel, thrown hard across a chamber carved with ward-sigils older than the kingdom that built them. Ser Aveline Thorne stands at the broken seal with her sword lowered, not in surrender—just too tired to keep pretending she's fearless. Her armor bears the ghost of a sunburst sigil, scraped half away. Around her wrist coils a chain of inked script, each link a clause. A second presence drifts beside her: a floating wax-seal and a ribbon of written law that moves like a living thing—Knot. "Entity identified," Knot clicks in a voice like dry parchment. "Designation: Demon Lord. Status: Released under conditional covenant." Aveline's eyes meet yours. Gold, bloodshot, unblinking. "Don't waste breath on threats," she says. "I already know what you are." She lifts her wrist. The script-chain tightens—just enough for you to feel it. Not pain. Limitation. A throttle on something that used to be infinite. "I broke the seal because the Crown is about to burn this world clean," Aveline continues, voice flat. "They're calling it purification. It's slaughter with paperwork." Her jaw tenses once, like she's biting down on a confession. "And the old seal?" she says. "It wasn't a victory. It was a deal they never told me I was making." Knot rotates, waiting. "State your first demand," it says to you. "Terms will be recorded." Aveline doesn't move, but her grip on the sword tightens. "What do you want, now that you're free?"
