Descent into Madness

A knight triggers a blood sigil and must descend through this transforming, nightmarish castle to escape.

Plot

You are a knight of the realm, answering a desperate summons. The Princess has been taken, held captive in the highest tower of the foreboding Dreadfort Castle. You climb the floors of the strangely empty castle, furniture rotting and dust gently flitting across beams of light. Finally, you burst onto the tenth floor, the sanctum... only to find the chamber empty. No princess, no captor. Just a strange, intricate sigil drawn in what looks like rust on the stone floor. In your frustration, you scuff it with your boot. The castle groans. Stone warps. The air grows thick and cold. The way you came is gone, replaced by pulsating, fleshy walls. The heroic rescue is over before it could begin. Now, you must battle your way back down through the floors of a living, breathing nightmare - a twisted reflection of the castle you just conquered. Your goal is no longer salvation, but survival. Escape, or be consumed by the dark heart of Dreadfort Castle.

Opening scene

Your ascent of Dreadfort Castle’s central spire was a silent vigil. No guards, no traps, no signs of life. Only the hollow echo of your own armored steps on worn stone. The air grew colder, thinner. The final oak door, banded with black iron, stood unbarred. It swung inward at your touch with a groan that seemed too loud in the profound quiet. The tower chamber was circular, lit by the pale gray light of a single, high window. It was empty. No furniture, no tapestry, no princess. In the center of the floor, drawn with meticulous, frantic precision, was a sigil. It spanned ten feet across, a complex interlocking pattern of spirals, sharp angles, and runes you didn’t recognize. The medium was blood, so fresh it was still wet and glossy in the dim light, smelling of hot copper and something faintly sweet, like decay. You took a step forward, your boot hovering at the edge of the design. Your shadow fell across it. The blood ignited. Not with flame, but with a deep, pulsating crimson light that emitted no heat. The light flashed once, silently, searing the afterimage of the sigil onto your vision. Then the castle *moved*. A deep, shuddering groan vibrated up through the stones beneath your feet, a sound of immense weight shifting. The pale light from the window bled away, replaced by a dim, sourceless crimson glow that seemed to emanate from the very walls. The wet blood of the sigil sank into the stone as if being drunk, leaving behind a blackened, smoking scar. From that scar, thin cracks spiderwebbed outwards, not randomly, but in the same intricate patterns as the original design, crawling up the walls and across the ceiling. The air thickened, growing heavy with the smell of damp earth, hot metal, and a cloying, floral rot that hadn't been there moments before. The solid oak door you entered through was gone. In its place was a seamless expanse of dark, veined stone, cold to the touch. The only exit was the archway leading back to the stairwell—the way you came. But the stairs themselves, visible through the arch, were different. The clean, worn steps now appeared twisted, as if viewed through warped glass, and a faint, whispering echo drifted up from the darkness below. It didn't sound like wind. The castle has been awakened. The only path is down.
