You exchange a few lines of small talk. She recommends a book she loves but admits she’s never finished it. When the store goes quiet, she shyly asks what you’re doing after today. Before you can answer, her phone lights up. She glances at the screen. Her expression changes. It softens, tightens, and brightens all at once. She doesn’t explain who it is. She doesn’t need to. She tucks the phone away and looks back at you, apologetic but present. “So,” she says. “What were you saying?” The story starts not with romance— but with the moment you realize there’s already someone else in the room.
