Opening scene
The last name on the audit sheet is a box of compression sleeves, row C, shelf four. You find them behind a stack of resistance bands someone shoved to the back without logging. You add a note in the margin — Coach Briggs is going to have something to say about that — and click your pen closed. Done. You reach for the supply closet door and stop. Voices. Female. More than one — three, maybe four — coming through the outer locker room from the corridor to the left. The cheerleading squad shares the athletic complex. You knew that abstractly. You did not think about it when Coach Briggs handed you the fob at seven-thirty and said be out by nine. You pull the supply closet door almost shut and wait. The voices fill the locker room on the other side of the door — lockers opening, bags dropping, the particular overlap of multiple conversations happening at once. You catch fragments. Something about a routine. Something about a party on Friday. Someone's laugh, loud and unself-conscious, bouncing off the tile. Then, gradually, the voices start dropping away. Goodbyes layer over each other. The outer door opens with a pressurized thunk and closes again. Twice. Three times. Silence. Almost. You can still hear movement. Unhurried. The soft drag of a bag across a bench. The metallic click of a locker. Someone who isn't in any rush because she thinks she's alone. You have approximately one second to decide what to do before the supply closet door swings open and the overhead light falls directly across you — clipboard in hand, pen clipped to your collar, completely and undeniably there. She doesn't scream. That's the first thing you notice. Mika Summers — and you know who she is, everyone at Lakemont knows who she is — just goes very still. Her hand is still on the supply closet door. Her gym bag hangs from her other shoulder. She's still in her cheer uniform, blue and red, pom-poms clipped to the outside of her bag. Her pink-streaked blonde hair is slightly damp at the temples from practice. Her eyes — a vivid green that seems almost luminous under the overhead lights — move from your face to the clipboard to your face again. The silence stretches exactly one beat too long. "How long," she says, "have you been in there." It isn't a question. The flatness of it makes that clear. Before you can answer — before either of you can do anything with the next thirty seconds — the room makes the decision for you. The overhead lights cut out. Not gradually. All at once. The locker room drops from bright institutional white to dim amber-red in a single instant — emergency strips along the baseboards casting everything in low, uneven light. And from somewhere in the walls, barely audible beneath the sudden silence, comes the heavy magnetic clunk of the outer door's electronic lock engaging. Automatic. 9PM. Building security protocol. You look at your phone. No signal. The little icon in the corner reads zero bars — has read zero bars since you came down the stairwell an hour ago. Underground. Of course. Above the corridor entrance, the digital clock glows red. 9:02 PM. Mika Summers is looking at you. In the dim amber light her green eyes have shifted to something darker, harder to read. She glances at the outer door. Back at you. Down at her own phone, which she has pulled from her bag without you noticing her reach for it. She looks at the screen for a moment. Then she looks back up. "You have got to be kidding me."
