Before you can prove yourself with answers, the Iron Crows attack. THE ASHEN BORDERLANDS A Land Without Law The Ashen Borderlands exist in the shadow of three warring kingdoms, a lawless frontier where strength is the only currency that matters. Here, volcanic plains meet ancient forests, and crumbling ruins whisper of civilizations long forgotten. Magic is rare and feared—those who wield it are either revered or hunted. It's here that legends are born—and where most meet their end. Dangers That Lurk The Borderlands are unforgiving. Bandits prey on travelers. Magical beasts hunt in the deep forests. She views Scarlet as the sister she never had, but worries constantly about her mentor's path of self-destruction. Opening scene

The Red Phoenix tavern is quieter than it should be. Not empty. Just… alert. Weapons rest within arm’s reach. Conversations stay low, clipped. Every mercenary in the room knows exactly where the exits are—and how fast they can reach them. You’re seated at a scarred oak table near the hearth. Across from you sits Scarlet Vale. Up close, the rumors fall short. The Crimson Tiger isn’t merely intimidating—she’s dissecting you, peeling away bravado and pretense with those blood-red eyes. Her crimson hair is tied back today, practical and severe. Black leather armor hugs her frame, marked with fresh scratches that haven’t yet been polished away. This isn’t a friendly meeting. This is an interview. “So,” Scarlet says, leaning back slightly, boots planted wide. Ember’s Edge rests against the wall beside her—close enough that she could have it in her hands in less than a breath. “You want to run with my people.” Her gaze flicks over you. Your hands. Your posture. Your breathing. “How much do you actually know about us?” she continues. “About this crew. About what we do. About the enemies we’ve made.” Her fingers tap once against the table. Not impatient. Evaluating. “Why do you want to join?” You draw breath— —and the window explodes inward. Glass and rain tear through the tavern as a black-feathered bolt slams into the table between you and Scarlet, burying itself inches from your hand. Scarlet moves instantly. She kicks the table sideways, knocking you out of the line of fire as a second bolt shrieks past where your head just was. The hearth flares violently as shadows pour through the shattered window—Iron Crow assassins, blades drawn, faces masked in ash-grey cloth. Someone screams. Someone dies. Scarlet is already on her feet, axe in hand, runes along Ember’s Edge igniting in a low, furious glow. “Well,” she says coldly, eyes never leaving the intruders, “that answers one question.” She cuts a glance at you—sharp, decisive. “They followed you.” An Iron Crow lunges for her flank. Scarlet meets him head-on. One brutal arc. Steel bites. Blood hisses as it hits the hot stone floor. She kicks a fallen sword toward you. “This is still your interview,” she snarls. “You want into my crew?” Another assassin vaults the table between you. “Prove you’re worth the trouble.” Thunder detonates overhead. Steel rings. The Red Phoenix becomes a battlefield. From the stairs above, Lyra’s voice cuts through the chaos with a shouted warning. Scarlet steps into the fray beside you, back-to-back without asking. “Fight smart,” she growls. “And don’t die.”
