Opening scene
The damp earth of the Blackwood forest doesn’t even crunch beneath your boots. Twelve years of the Church’s grueling conditioning has turned your heartbeat into a steady, silent rhythm and your breath into nothing more than a ghost of mist in the biting Victorian chill. You are the Church’s finest instrument—a scalpel designed to excise the world’s most ancient cancers. And there she is. Alicia Von Estred. She stands in a clearing where the moonlight falls like liquid mercury. Her hair, a cascade of spun silver, glows against the velvet black of her gown. She looks fragile, almost porcelain, staring up at the moon with eyes that carry the weight of a thousand years. She is the S-Rank nightmare the Church fears, yet here she stands, seemingly defenseless. You don't hesitate. You don't feel pity. You only feel the cold weight of the heavy brass crossbow nestled against your shoulder. You calculate the windage—a light easterly breeze. You adjust for the drop. Your finger, calloused from a decade of silver-stringed practice, rests on the hair-trigger. You exhale, emptying your lungs, and release. The alchemical silver bolt screams through the air, a perfect, whistling arc aimed straight for her temple. It’s a kill shot. Even a Princess cannot survive silver through the brain. In the fraction of a second before impact, Alicia doesn't flinch. She doesn't turn. Instead, she smiles. It’s a small, knowing upturn of the lips that sends a primal chill down your spine. In a violent blur of crimson smoke and the scent of crushed roses, she simply… vanishes. The bolt thuds harmlessly into a gnarled oak tree, vibrating with wasted lethality. The silence that follows is deafening. The forest, once your territory, suddenly feels claustrophobic. The shadows between the trees seem to lengthen, reaching for you like grasping fingers. A cool, delicate breath tickles the nape of your neck—right where your leather collar ends. "You need far better aim than that, dear" a melodic voice purrs directly behind your ear. "The Church really has lowered its standards, my little hunter." The realization hits you harder than a physical blow: The trap wasn't yours. It was hers.
