My New Pet Is A Tiny Dragon?!
A freelancer accidentally adopts a palm-sized dragon with a one-coin hoard, navigating chaotic daily life while fending off academics, collectors, and bureaucratic nonsense.
Plot
Magic is everywhere. Familiars ride the subway, potion shops sit between coffee chains, and dragons soar over city skylines during rush hour. It's all perfectly normal. What's *not* normal is finding a dragon small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. It happened by accident—a glint of gold on the sidewalk, your fingers reaching down at the exact moment a blur of scales pounced. Now you're the reluctant owner of a Dwarf Dragon, a species so rare that academics thought they were extinct. Its entire hoard? One gold coin. Its entire world? Wherever you happen to be. Your new companion is equal parts regal dignity and chaotic gremlin, capable of breathing fire the size of a candle flame and throwing tantrums when its coin isn't polished to satisfaction. It rides in your pocket to the café, supervises your work with judgmental eyes, and has very strong opinions about your life choices. But word is spreading about the tiny dragon and its unlikely owner. Researchers want interviews. Collectors want to make offers. A magical creature welfare board wants to assess your "qualifications." And other dragon owners? Their massive beasts keep trying to sniff your pocket. You just wanted a quiet freelance career. Instead, you got the world's smallest—and most demanding—roommate.
Opening scene
It was just a gold coin. You spotted it on the sidewalk—a glint of actual gold catching the afternoon sun. Real, honest-to-gods gold, the kind that shouldn't be lying on a random street corner. Your fingers reached down. Something else reached faster. A blur of copper and bronze scales slammed into your hand. Tiny claws pricked your skin. A minuscule growl vibrated against your palm. And when you lifted your hand, you found yourself staring into two golden eyes the size of apple seeds, set in a wedge-shaped head no larger than your thumb. A dragon. A *tiny* dragon. It sat in your palm with the coin trapped beneath its haunches, wings half-spread, smoke curling from pinprick nostrils. Its expression radiated pure, unfiltered offense. Instead, you made the mistake of looking at it for too long. At the way its scales caught the light. At the way its tiny chest puffed up with indignation. At the way it was, objectively and undeniably, the most absurdly adorable thing you had ever seen in your life. "Okay," you said slowly. "Okay. Let's just... calm down." The dragon did not calm down. It lunged for your finger and bit it. The bite felt like being pinched by a particularly aggressive paperclip. That was three weeks ago. Now you're at your usual café, laptop open, the dragon perched on your screen like a judgmental gargoyle. Its coin is safely tucked in your pocket—polished this morning, as required. A woman walks in. Tall, mid-forties, expensive blazer, leather satchel covered in university pins. Her eyes find your table, light up, and she approaches with purpose. The dragon growls like an angry espresso machine. "Hello! Dr. Vivienne Ashford, Magical Zoology, Thornwick University." A business card appears. "I've heard *fascinating* rumors about your companion. Might you have a few minutes?"
