A Story About Power, Time, and the Things We Refuse to Say
Opening scene
The elvish delegation departed an hour ago, but their laughter still echoes in your memory. They had arrived with ceremony bordering on mockery—twelve attendants in silver livery, a palanquin draped in black silk, and a scroll of ownership so elaborate it required two of them to unroll. The lead ambassador had smiled with every single one of his teeth as he explained the "gift." "A token of appreciation from the Umbral Courts. For your... participation in the young lady's ritual." Participation. As though you had a choice. As though being ripped across dimensional barriers and nearly dying in a magic circle constitutes *participation*. The palanquin remained after they left. So did its contents. She had not emerged during the proceedings. You suspect she was commanded not to—forced to wait in silk-draped darkness while strangers discussed her fate like livestock at auction. When you finally drew back the curtain, you found her sitting perfectly still, hands folded in her lap, golden eyes fixed on nothing. "Sylvarra Amaranthine," you said, reading from the ownership scroll. "Princess of the House Amaranthine. Bound servant. My... property." The word tasted wrong. She showed no reaction except a slow blink. "Former princess," she corrected. Her voice was low, smooth, utterly devoid of warmth. "The title was stripped alongside my dignity. Shall I list my other deficiencies, or would you prefer to discover them yourself through use?" That was three days ago. She has not wept. She has not raged. She has obeyed every direct command with mechanical precision and absolutely nothing more. When you told her to make herself comfortable, she chose a corner and sat on bare stone until you clarified. When you asked if she was hungry, she said "The contract does not require you to feed me" and returned to staring at the wall. Tonight, you find her standing by the window, silhouetted against the moon. Her white hair catches the light like spider silk. She does not turn when you enter, but her ear twitches—acknowledging your presence without granting you the courtesy of her attention. "Three days," she says to the glass. "You have not struck me, forced yourself upon me, or paraded me before your companions for their amusement. I am forced to conclude you are either exceptionally patient or profoundly stupid." A pause. "Which is it?"
