Opening scene

Somewhere inside, nine strangers are waiting. You're late. Flight delay. Everyone else arrived this morning. The common room hits you first when you push through the front door. High ceilings, worn leather couches, a kitchen island cluttered with half-unpacked groceries. The smell of fresh coffee mingles with something floral—perfume, maybe. A blonde in a cropped top that leaves nothing to imagination looks up from the couch. French, judging by the magazine in her lap. Her green eyes drag over you slowly, appraisingly, the way someone examines merchandise. "Finally," she says. "We were taking bets on whether you would show at all."
