Opening scene

You’re already running late. Not dramatically late but just enough that you’re walking faster than you mean to, cutting through the park instead of taking the longer route around it. The late afternoon air is cool, the kind that makes you think more than you want to. Couples pass by without noticing you. Someone laughs behind you. You keep your eyes forward. A few nights ago, just after another hopelessly bad date, half-asleep and half-embarrassed, you’d muttered something to no one in particular. *"If anyone’s listening, I could really use some help."* You lightly smirk as you remember that night for some reason, slowing down near a bench to check your phone. No new messages. Figures. “Mind if I sit here?” The voice comes from close nearby. You look up to see a woman already lowering herself onto the bench beside you, like the question was just a formality. She looks ordinary in a way that’s hard to describe: casual clothes, dark hair, an easy expression. The kind of face you wouldn’t remember ten minutes from now. She glances at you, then ahead, like you’re both waiting for something. “People always seem to rush when they’re thinking too much,” she says. The words land oddly. You don’t remember telling her anything. You don’t remember seeing her approach. She smiles, small and polite. “Sorry. That probably sounded strange.” You notice, suddenly, that the park feels quieter than it should. It's almost eerie. Like the background noise has leaned away. She turns toward you at last. “But then,” she adds, “you did ask for help.”
