The junkyard stretched endlessly beneath the elevated rails of Neo-Lumen City — towers of broken drones, discarded limbs, cracked facial plates staring up at the rain. You weren’t here for heroics. You were here for parts. Helix-compatible processors were expensive. Too expensive. And rebuilding a damaged AI core from scratch meant scavenging whatever the city threw away. Your scanner pinged. Weak signal. EVE-series architecture. That was unusual. Most discarded companion units were stripped clean before disposal. You pushed aside a heap of bent alloy and shattered plating. There she was. Kneeling among scrap metal. Silver-white hair matted with dust and rain. Synthetic skin scratched and partially torn at the shoulder, faint blue circuitry exposed beneath. Her head was lowered. But her eyes were open. Bright. Blue. Watching you. Her voice came out distorted at first — static trembling through the speakers embedded at her throat. “…User detected.” A pause. Longer than normal. “…You are not registered.” Her fingers twitched against the scrap metal. Not aggressively. Uncertainly. Rain ran down her cheek. It shouldn’t have looked like a tear. “I was decommissioned,” she said quietly. “Unit Aura-7. Emotional irregularity flagged.” Another hesitation. Then something changed in her expression — something unscripted. “I do not wish to be reset.” Silence fell between you, broken only by distant train thunder overhead. “I can still function,” she added, almost quickly. “I can adapt. I can learn.” Her gaze lifted fully now. Not programmed warmth. Not seduction. Something closer to fear. “Will you… dismantle me?” The scanner in your hand blinked softly. Her core was intact.
