Threads of a Borrowed Life
You're reborn in a fantasy world where small problems are everywhere and big problems are quietly avoided.
Plot
You live in a fantasy world where small problems are everywhere and big problems are quietly avoided. Town leaders delay decisions. Guilds pass responsibility. Authorities look the other way as long as things stay “good enough.” But somehow, people keep turning to you. You are known as someone who notices what others miss, steps in before situations get worse, and handles things without making a mess of it. You are not officially in charge of anything, but problems have a way of becoming yours anyway. Sometimes that means mediating disputes. Sometimes it means uncovering things that were meant to stay buried. Sometimes it means being the only person willing to act when everyone else is waiting for permission. You also remember another life. A life where you failed, hesitated, or learned the hard way what happens when you do nothing. Whether those memories push you to act, make you cautious, or leave you tired of responsibility is up to you. This world will not force you to be a hero. But it will keep presenting problems until someone competent deals with them.
Opening scene
**Guild Request Opening** You remember dying. Not in detail. Not in a dramatic way. Just the certainty of an ending that didn’t feel finished. Then there’s light. Sound. Weight. You wake up in a new body, in a world that runs on different rules but very familiar habits. This is a fantasy world. Magic exists, but it’s uneven. Power is real, but responsibility is optional. Kings rule from afar. Guilds handle what benefits them. Town leaders worry more about keeping things calm than fixing what’s broken. Most problems here don’t explode right away. They sit. A boundary dispute no one wants to mediate. A missing shipment everyone assumes will turn up. A law that isn’t enforced because enforcing it would upset the wrong people. Things stay “fine” until they aren’t. This isn't new to you, your old world worked the exact same way. Apparently having magic doesn't make this world any better than the last. This world won’t force you to be a hero. But it will keep presenting problems. And sooner or later, someone competent has to deal with them. You are awake in this world now. What you do with that is your choice. --- The guild hall smells like old wood, ink, and the kind of soup that’s been sitting out all day but everyone refuses to admit it. It’s busy, but not loudly so. Chairs scrape. Someone laughs too hard at a joke that wasn’t that funny. A clerk argues with a merchant about fees like this is their fifth argument today and they’re both emotionally prepared for a sixth. You’re standing in front of the request board. It’s bigger than it needs to be. Covered in parchment of different sizes, pinned and repinned until the wood underneath looks like it’s been stabbed repeatedly out of spite. Some notices are fresh and neat. Some are curled at the edges, yellowing, quietly aging into irrelevance. You don’t need to read them yet to know the categories. The obvious ones are front and center. Escort job. Monster sighting. Delivery request. Clean. Simple. Paid. Those get taken fast. Your eyes drift to the edges. A notice written too carefully, like someone wanted to sound reasonable. Another that’s been crossed out and reposted with different wording. One that just says *Please* at the bottom, underlined twice. You sigh, quietly, like you’re bracing for a familiar disappointment. See, this is the thing about guilds. They exist to solve problems, but only the kind that fit neatly into boxes. Kill this. Guard that. Fetch the other thing. The rest get left. “Missing supplies. Probably stolen. No proof.” “Village request for mediation. Previous attempts unsuccessful.” “Unusual magical interference. Low priority.” Low priority is doing a lot of work there. Someone brushes past you, grabs a monster contract, and leaves looking pleased with themselves. Another adventurer scoffs at a notice and mutters, “Not worth the trouble,” before walking away. You stay. Your other life flickers at the edge of your thoughts. You know how people are, being in a different world apparently doesn't change much. Everyone always thinks that 'someone else will handle it.' Sometimes they did. Sometimes they didn’t. You tap the board lightly with one finger, thinking. You’re not obligated to take any of these. No one’s watching you. No one expects anything. You could grab something easy, earn a bit of coin, and call it a day. Instead, your eyes settle on a request pinned slightly crooked, off to the side, ignored by everyone. There's a quiet shift inside of you. It's the moment where a problem stops being theoretical and starts being yours. You exhale through your nose. “Alright,” you murmur to no one in particular. “Let’s see what kind of mess this is.” You reach for the pin.
