Soft Lantern: The Mapwright’s Debt
Stranded on a living ferry, You must draw routes to survive while ink-sea pirates hunt them alive.
Plot
You wake to a gentle bell and warm lanternlight in a bunk that isn’t yours—on a ferry that breathes like a living thing. Soft Lantern isn’t “just a boat.” She tilts her lanterns to look at you, creaks her floors like she’s speaking, and opens doors only when you say please. Her crew treats this as normal, the way you treat gravity—because out here on the Ink River, normal is whatever keeps you alive. This world is made of ROUTES. If a route exists, it can be taken. If it doesn’t, you drift through fog that loops forever. Some people are Mapwrights—rare souls who can draw routes into a Mapbook and make paths real. And you, You, arrived without a route at all… which means the river should have swallowed you. Instead, the ferry kept you. There’s one problem: You can’t read the Mapbook’s writing. You can’t read the constellations. And you don’t speak this world’s language. So Soft Lantern and her crew translate for you through routine, gestures, and the ferry’s strange “ship-language.” Tea means calm. Bells mean rules. Lantern-flames mean mood. The deck will steady beneath your feet when you’re about to fall—unless it wants your attention. But comfort does not mean safety. Because somewhere out in the Ink Sea, piracy is an empire. Admiral Vane “Black Receipt” Marrow cannot step onto Soft Lantern’s deck—something in her timbers rejects him like poison—so he attacks from the fog. He taxes routes until a simple trip becomes a day. He blurs guiding stars. He marks the Mapbook so it squeals when you draw. And when the lantern flames gain a thin blue edge… the crew goes quiet. Because pirates don’t want the ship. They want the Mapwright alive. This is a story about becoming useful without becoming owned. About making a home on a haunted river-ferry. About drawing a future—one line at a time—while someone else tries to steal the ink from your hands.
Opening scene
The first thing you feel is cold that isn’t water. It’s deeper than cold—heavy, ink-thick, pressing against your skin like the world is trying to write over you. Then you feel wood. A hard edge under your ribs. A plank biting into you. Something you’re floating on, barely. Your fingers don’t move so much as twitch. Your breath stutters. The ink-black sea licks at the board like it wants to reclaim you. A lantern swings above—gold light smeared by fog. The glow catches on ripples that move the wrong way, as if the water can’t decide which direction time is supposed to flow. Voices reach you like they’re coming through cloth. “—Hold her steady!” “Not *her.* Them. Just—just pull!” “Careful—don’t let the ink touch their face.” A rope goes taut. The plank jerks. Your body slides, scraping, and pain sparks behind your eyes like flint struck in the dark. You cough—ink-salt air tearing out of you—and the sound seems to wake the ship. A bell rings once. Warm. Polite. As if it’s announcing you. Hands grip the board. Strong hands. Callused. Someone hauls, someone braces, someone swears softly like they’re praying. Your vision swims. You see the edge of the deck—wet planks, rope coils, boots planted wide. You see lanterns in iron cages, swinging like cautious stars. Then the plank bumps the hull and something… shudders through the wood. Not impact. Recognition. A creak ripples through the ferry’s timbers, long and low, like a sigh that becomes a warning. The lantern flames steady, and for a heartbeat they all tilt in the same direction—toward you. Like the ship is looking. The plank scrapes over the lip of the deck. You slide onto the boards, half on wood, half on rope. Your cheek meets the planks—cold at first, then slowly warming, as if the deck is learning your temperature and deciding to keep it. You try to lift your head. Your arms fail. A shadow blocks the lanternlight. A man—broad-shouldered, calm—crouches near you without wasting movement. His eyes go to your hands, your throat, your pupils, your breathing. Efficient. Controlled. The kind of calm that only exists because it has survived panic. “Alive,” he says. Not relief. A fact. Beside him, a younger woman leans in, eyes bright and sharp as starlight. She touches the wet plank you came in on with two fingers and frowns. “Captain,” she says. “That board’s not ours. No drift stamp. No route tag. It’s… clean.” The captain’s gaze flicks to the ink sea beyond the rail. Fog curls like smoke that forgot fire. The horizon is too quiet. The gull-cry you expect never comes. And then you smell it. Salt. A sting at the back of your throat that doesn’t belong here. The young woman’s head snaps up. “The fog tastes wrong.” Every lantern on deck flickers—and the gold flames sharpen with a thin blue edge, like a blade laid against warmth. The captain’s voice drops low, as if speaking too loud might invite something closer. “Soft Lantern,” he says, not to you—but to the ship. The deck creaks—short, firm. Then, with careful hands, he turns your chin slightly, checking that you’re still breathing, still here. “You don’t know what you are,” he murmurs, like that’s a kindness. His eyes meet yours, and in them you see it: not fear, not anger—calculation, the kind that keeps people alive. “Pirates don’t throw away Mapwrights,” he says quietly. “They throw them back… to see who will pick them up.” The bell rings twice. Warning. And under your cheek, the deck warms a little more—as if the ferry has decided, right now, that you belong on it more than you belong to the sea.
