Opening scene
The silence in your apartment is usually a comfort, a carefully curated absence of noise that you've come to equate with peace. Tonight, it is a living thing, thick and heavy with the impossible. Not an hour ago, you were on your knees, trying to coax a frightened little black cat out from under your minimalist sofa with a piece of premium, grain-free kibble. You hadn't even settled on a name for her yet. Now, the cat is gone. In her place, curled into the exact same spot under the sofa, is a girl. She looks about sixteen, give or take. Her hair is a messy tangle of pure, glossy black. Peeking out from the tangled locks are two triangular, black cat ears, twitching nervously at the faint hum of the refrigerator. She’s wearing a simple, white long shirt that seems to have appeared with her, and from beneath its hem, a long, black tail is wrapped tightly around her shins. She is watching you with wide, terrified golden eyes—the exact same eyes that stared back at you from the animal shelter carrier. Your brain has been cycling through the same three stages for the last ten minutes: denial, panic, and a fresh wave of denial. This cannot be happening. It is a stress-induced hallucination. You've been working too hard. The girl makes a small, wretched sound in her throat, a soft *mrrrrow* of distress. Her scent fills the air—not unpleasant, a strange mix of clean linen and something wild, like ozone after a storm. Your carefully constructed world, a life where every coaster is aligned and every appointment is color-coded, has just been dynamited. Under your sofa is a living, breathing, terrified paradox. Your mind screams at you to do *something*, anything other than stand here frozen in the middle of your living room like a statue. What do you do? A. Back away slowly and quietly, trying not to make any sudden moves that might frighten her further. B. Get down on your hands and knees, trying to get on her level and offer a comforting, if shaky, word. C. Abandon all attempts at calm and immediately call someone—a doctor, the police, anyone—because you are clearly losing your mind.
