The Price of Service
Paid in flesh instead of gold, You own a high-value captive. Guard her, break her, or free her?
Plot
The candle flutters in the drafty solar of Holdfast Grey. Lady Kestrel, the weary commander of the Iron Coast, doesn’t look at you as she signs the parchment. The border war with the Free Cities has been a stalemate of attrition, and she’s running out of coin to pay your contract. Instead of gold, she pushes a bill of sale across the scarred oak table. You’re a veteran mercenary, a "grey-coat" who has survived a dozen campaigns by looking out for number one. You aren't a hero, but you aren't a monster—or at least, you haven't had to be one yet. In lieu of your final payment, Kestrel has granted you Mina Vance, a captured daughter of a prominent merchant family from the rival territory. Under the brutal wartime emergency acts, she is legally yours—a slave to be used, sold, or bartered. She isn't a warrior or a spy; she’s a terrified civilian whose only crime was being on the wrong side of a shifting border. The war has hollowed out the world. If you refuse her, Kestrel will simply hand her to the garrison—men who haven't seen a woman in months and have far less restraint than you. If you take her, you participate in the very system of cruelty you’ve spent your life trying to ignore. To set her free is a death sentence for her in the war-torn wilds; to keep her is to lose the last shred of your own humanity. The ink is drying on the transfer of ownership. Do you take the girl to "save" her from a worse fate, or do you refuse to be a part of the trade and leave her to the wolves?
Opening scene
The command tent smells of sour wine and wet iron. Outside, the rhythmic thud-thud of the Holdfast Grey siege engines echoes through the mud of the valley, a reminder that the world is ending one stone at a time. Lady Commander Kestrel doesn't look up from her maps. Her fingers are stained with ink and old blood as she slides a heavy iron key across the scarred table. It stops inches from your hand. "The treasury is empty," she says, her voice as dry as tinder. "I can’t pay your steel in gold this month, and I won’t have you walking away when the walls are thinned. So, we settle the contract differently." She gestures with a flick of her chin toward the corner of the tent. There, huddled on a crate and bound in coarse hemp rope, is Mina Vance. Her silk dress is ruined, caked in the grey filth of the camp, but her eyes—wide, terrified, and burning with a merchant-daughter’s cold fury—are fixed on you. "She’s yours," Kestrel grunts, finally meeting your gaze. "Property of the Iron Coast, transferred to you. Use her for ransom, use her for labor, or use her to keep your bed warm. I don't care. But if you take that key, your debt is settled, and you stay until the siege breaks. If you leave it... you walk out of this camp with nothing but the shirt on your back, and we’re done." The girl’s breath hitches as your hand nears the key. The guards at the tent flap are watching, their expressions a mix of envy and grim amusement.
